    Something positive

I think I prefer "Superstar": Carpenters - Superstar - Acapella (near) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K9wqJJi87yA The Ronettes - Baby I Love You (Isolated Vocals) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zM4wLjD6Clg

    Help in wood ID

Oak is quite easy to ID, it has very prominent and wide rays.

    rosewood on ebay

The original thread didn't show the unplaned side which had a lot of cracks, that would affect the price I would think. Also, the final winning price probably would have been £60 less if the winning bidder didn't bid early.

    Cycling question

The reason for riding out away from the left kerb when the road is narrow is so that drivers can't overtake too close, ie too small a gap between cyclist and driver. It says so in the Highway Code. When the road is wide enough, obviously the cyclist should keep to the left (but not ride as far...

    Portable Telephone Advice

If you've already got a phone and you're a low to medium (amounts of minutes and data) user, then Three payg is absolutly the best deal! I was on Vodafone payg before changing to Three, calls were 25p per min! God knows what the data prices were, I never dared to use it.

    ebony wood blanks

I agree. And it's not just about the price or its working qualities. If it's just for decorative effect, then I think it's a bit of a waste to use ebony. And to cut up a long ebony guitar fingerboard into little pieces is certainly a waste! If you must use ebony, then the ideal source would be...

    plane adjusting hammers

Maybe I've been doing it wrong, but I thought the wedge needs loosening a bit, obviously not completely loose, but just enough so the blade moves a tiny bit when you tap it. If the wedge is fully tight then surely light taps are not going to move the blade. And also, after setting the blade...

    plane adjusting hammers

I suspect the mushrooming is caused by hitting it with a hammer with the wedge still tight. I don't know if that's just to save time (couldn't be bothered to first loosen the wedge), or the user just didn't know any better. Wouldn't a hammer be harder than the relatively soft iron on a laminted...

    Handmade

Sums it up. The programmes are works of art! I don't know if it's a coincidence but the knife maker calls himself an artist as well. It's obvious that the programmes were not made to tell the viewer anything about the crafts. And they even failed in their claims, I didn't get any sense of...

There are shavings and then there are SHAVINGS!!

My thinnest shavings are about 0.00001mm but since that's thinner than the wood cells, they turn to dust as soon as they come out of the plane!

    Sausages

One of the worst food I've eaten was a Sainsbury pork and apple sausage! And my tastes are not even all that fussy, I think savloys and the shrink wraped U shaped sausage are quite tasty!

Handmade - Monday evening BBC 4

Looking at http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b05ttnd7/episodes/guide it doesn't look like any episodes have been broadcast yet. I think most TV documetaries are ruined by music and could do without a presenter, but no commentary/narration or even captions? I hope at least the maker describes...

    Cast Steel

I don't have my Salaman's Dictionary of Woodworking Tools on hand at the moment, but I think it says "cast steel" was made as a molten metal and then poured into casts, in contrast to the previous type of steel which was "blister steel", made by heating iron with a source of carbon like...

Ward chisels and gouges, but not Ward & Payne?

Thanks, I've already linked to that web page, about halfway down, that's where I got the 1843 as the starting year for Ward & Payne: http://swingleydev.com/archive/get.php? ... t_thread=1 Mine are 8mm and 9mm, approx 3/8.

Ward chisels and gouges, but not Ward & Payne?

Hi, thanks for that. I was editing my post to add stuff about David Ward, so has anyone seen or know how the pre-Payne Ward tools were marked?

Ward chisels and gouges, but not Ward & Payne?

Hello, Has anybody got or seen "Ward" chisels or gouges but presumably are not ""Ward & Payne"? I have a couple of small (well used!) Ward gouges: "Ward" is the only marking. The only info online I can find is: http://www.alte-beitel.de/ward.html which says: James Ward (& Son) 27 Old Kent...

    Hand Tool Reference Books.

Not eactly reference books but catalogues, eg 1938 Marples or the Melhuish ones are excellent to see what was avaialble and their comparative prices. The problem with some of the books mentoned is that they are out of print and book dealers are charging rip off prices for them!
