    highest bidder reserve not met

Bidding early means you probably either don't win or you pay more than you need to. Not all bidders bid only once and put in their maximum bid. This a very simplified example: Bidding early: Item starts at £1. Bidder 1 thinks it's worth £100, bids £100 early, and is the current highest...

Oak Furniture Land - how's this for hype ?

I don't think it's very useful to compare mass manufactured furniture made in a factory with one off custom stuff made by one person. One person is never going to compete with a factory on price. I suppose it's the size of the pieces of wood, even a “solid" wooden table top is going to be made...

    Grinling Gibbons

I had thought each piece was carved from one piece of wood, then I found out in fact they were lots of small carvings stuck together!

My new folding workbench - I'm after some feedback!

Re "premium" product, I think that's more to with brand image and marketing than the actual product.

My new folding workbench - I'm after some feedback!

Is 'Chestnut' the brand or company name? There's a wood finishing products company with that name.

    Free Pallet Wood?

I think you can get free pallet wood just picking up what gets left lying around, from industrial units, house being renovated etc.

    Car Boot Hone

I've seen some pics of the box, they all said 6d, that's 6 old pence, right? In the 1925 Melhuish cataloge, there are prices for various stones (page 86 on PDF): Water of Ayr: -/10, 1/3, 1/6, ie 10d, 15d, 18d, I presume the 18d is for the "full" size 200mm/8in stone. All below are 200mm/8in...

Why is Healthy Food So expensive in UK?

There's been a lot of good points made so far but to a casual visitor to a typical UK supermarket, it might seem odd that well over half (maybe even two thirds) of the food there is junk food. You see entire aisles of crisps, fizzy drinks, sweets, cakes, biscuits, desserts, nasty manufactured...

    new tv licensing laws

Not quite. You need a licence to watch or record any live broadcast TV, and now also specifically "catch-up" TV from the BBC. You don't need a licence for "catch-up" TV from non-BBC channels, eg ITV, Channel4 etc.

    Vintage planes

There are UK tool dealers who sell old planes but their prices will be even higher. If you search on Ebay for prices of completed auctions, you'll find there's a big range from low to high. Millers Falls planes tend to be less common than Stanley or Records in the the UK, it might be better...

How about burning it off with a blow torch or one of those flame throwers for removing weeds?

    Welsh Tools?

I've got an Elvicta bow saw (300mm blade), on it is stamped "Elvicta, Elliott Lucas, Cannock England". It seems Elvicta was a subsidiary of Elliott-Lucas: http://news.bbc.co.uk/local/midwales/hi ... 543949.stm So interestingly, some Sorby, Tyzack etc tools might have been made in Wales!

Creative Craftsmen Need For A New TV Show.

The OP should have said what type of programme it's going to be; mass audience crap (ie reality competition TV) or serious stuff that gets shown on BBC4 only.

Looking for an electronic version of an old book

The author died in 1911, so this book is definitely out of copyright in the UK, and probably worldwide. From https://support.google.com/books/answer/43729?hl=en I suspect Google doesn't make the book available because they get money from booksellers advertising on the Google page for the book.

    Why is Lidl so Cheap?

The only problem with Lidl and Aldi are the long queues at checkout, usually there's at least 4 or 5 people in front of you in the queue. If you go really early in the morning or late in the evening, it's less busy but then they only open 1 or 2 tills. With Sainsbury/Tesco etc, you can go in...

Private sales using Paypal - warning

The simple rule is only accept cash if the the buyer collects. If the buyer sends someone else to collect, then also accept cash only. Paypal, and also Ebay, will only accept a tracked method of delivery, ie a signature on delivery by a courier/postman, as proof that a seller has sent the goods.

It seems Northern Ireland and Ireland have same specials: http://www.lidl-ni.co.uk/en/Offers.htm?id=788 http://www.lidl.ie/en/Offers.htm?id=860 Whilst the UK minus Northern Ireland have different specials: http://www.lidl.co.uk/en/index.htm

Tool ID: telescopic sliding pointer burnisher thingy?

Thanks all. I got this pic off Ebay of one where the tip comes off and slides back in the other way but without the telescopic bit:

Tool ID: telescopic sliding pointer burnisher thingy?

I got this in a job lot of chisels and misc woodworking tools: The main section has another tube inside and slides out. The second part comes off, you turn it around and put it back in, the "pointer" seems to be a translucent plastic. When extended it's the length of a pen. It's quite finely...
