do NOT try this at home

It might seem a crazy idea; how about using safety devices such as a blade guard and riving knife, as legally required in a commercial workshop. Working with an unguarded completely open blade spinning at thousands of rpm, as shown in endless Youtube vids, is just an accident waiting to happen...

    Chopsticks

Is it possible for something that takes absolutely no skill to be "the most satisfying and enjoyable woodwork you will ever do"?! "Master craftsman" and zero skill don't go together either!!

    Hand planes

https://paulsellers.com/2014/05/does-pl ... you-hours/ You hit the bellied bit of the iron with a soft faced hammer. I think it would be better to put a piece of wood on the iron and then hit the piece of wood. But there's chance the iron might crack, as mentioned in one of the comments.

    Quangsheng Router Plane

I think it looks like it's in between the larger 71 router and the smaller 721 router in size. It has the 12mm cutter of the 71 but with a smaller body. The 721 is a lot smaller in body and it has a 6mm cutter. At £60, I think it's way overpriced for what is actually a simple tool. If you can...

Lacquer on Record 077a bull nose plane

I've got a Record 077a bull nose plane, it seems to have lacquer all over it including under the "handle", is it original? There's some rust "veins" under the lacquer and I had to scrape it off before sanding off the rust.

    Online printing of single sheets?

If you decide to get a printer, I recommend a laser printer. It's ideal for regular but low usage, works every time. Although for printing one letter every four years, obviously getting it printed is better and you don't need your own printer.

    Making Floats

I've just made 2 small ones, about 80mm long, from 3mm ground flat stock. Not hardened. They're for making small planes and I hold them with my fingers, although I might put handles on them later. I used a triangular needle file and did it all by eye, teeth spacing is about 16 and 20 tpi. if I...

New Axminster Precision Range (Rulers, Squares etc)

    µm is micrometre/micron, there's 1,000 µm in 1 mm. The 100mm DIN 875/2 square is within 30µm, 30µm = 0.03mm (30/1,000), or 3 hundredth of 1 mm

New Axminster Precision Range (Rulers, Squares etc)

I suspect it's "DIN875/II" ie roman numeral "2", not eleven or one one: "DIN875/11".

Does an edge last longer with a back bevel ?Scrub plane talk

If it does, i would think that's because the bevel of the cutting edge is higher. If the iron has a 30 degree edge, and then you add a back bevel of say 10 degrees, then the edge would have a bevel of 40 degrees, which would stay sharp longer but at the expense of being harder to push.

Do you have a big mallet that you like?

If the need is for a heavy mallet (tend to be made from heavier and harder wood) that won't damage chisel handles, why not stick softer wood on the striking surface? One of the first things I made is a pine mallet. It weighs about the same a normal joiner's beech mallet but it's bigger. The...

    "Registered" firmer chisels

There's no argument about what is a registered chisel, it's just that that particular website prefers a more descriptive name.

Plane mouth size and pitch (blade angle)

To prevent tearout on figured wood and for a single iron plane (no cap iron), does the mouth size relate to the effective pitch of the iron? If you have a higher pitch, does it mean you can get away with having a wider mouth? Eg can a 55 degree effective pitch plane have a wider mouth than one...

Does meths colour bare wood? Guitar build.

I've got some meths that's gone clear, it's not that old. Industrial denatured alcohol (IDA) is clear (colourless) but you need a licence to buy it.

Tool buying on Ebay in a nutshell.

If your talking about the ridiculously high starting prices of some items (auctions and Buy It Nows), they almost never get sold.

Whats the deal with Danish Oil?

Aren't there oils and varnishes especially designed for work tops? I suspect they would contain more resins which are more waterproof and harder wearing.

    Lidl tool time again

http://www.lidl.co.uk/en/our-offers-2491.htm?id=990 The chisels are now £7, I remember they were £8 the last few times, at least in the last 2 or 3 years.

    Lidl tool time again

I've got the saw, yes it's very sharp and gives a smooth finish, but some of the teeth have broken off. Best to go gently when sawing and not force it.

    stanley bailey

I think bedrock is the other type of all-metal bench plane design, the difference being the shape and mounting of the frog. AFAIK non-Stanley Bailey type planes (eg Record) don't have the word "Bailey" on them. Maybe more recently made Stanley Bailey type planes don't have "bailey" on them...
