    Sawstop News Update

They've really got this back to front. If Americans used table saws properly, ie with guard, riving knife, right technique etc, then they would reduce the 30,000 accidents per year by 99%. I feel sorry for those didn't know any better but who got injured. I think there was a case where a school...

    Hand plane sole flatness?

800 grit? Knock off a zero from that!

My first "Norris" plane - help needed please

I hadn't thought of using shims on the bed! The mouth might have been widened, and the casting bed filed steeper. On a mitre plane the mouth can be very narrow in an absolute sense because of the bevel up blade.

My first "Norris" plane - help needed please

It's just guess; this might originally be a mitre plane that's had all its bits removed and then a handle from a trying plane was added to it. I can't work out how the adjustable bed works, it looks like the top half (with the handle) is screwed to the metal body but the bottom half can slide...

    Which vintage Blockplane to get?

The most common low angle one is the Stanley 60 1/2. Later ones were numbered 060, I think, and it has a lateral adjuster whereas earlier ones didn't.

Record & Stanley, Laminated Plane Irons

Back on topic  I had a look at a couple of irons, the line is quite faint and it's soft and fuzzy, I have thought it would be more distinct.

    Resaw by hand video

I think the key to resawing is you need the workpiece to be held firmly and in the right position. It's one of the few jobs where not having a vice is a real disadvantage. It looks to me he's standing too far from the workpiece; he's only using about half the length of the saw. And his action...

End of another Tour de France and Sky/Brailsford. Clean?

Well of course Wiggins, Froome, Team Sky etc haven't failed any dope tests (nor did Lance Armstrong!) but they certainly took PEDs that were allowed under the secret TUE (therapeutic use exemption) rules. Armstrong was able win his first Tour de France because of TUE and a cover up by the UCI...

    Which wood rasp

If you can wait 2 or 3 weeks for delivery, the same tool is £2.80, search for "4 in 1 rasp file" then select "lowest price + pp".

Cleaning brushes and Mylands Lacacote sanding sealer

Thanks for the excellent reply! That's really good advice re the meths getting loaded up with shellac, therefore needing more or fresh meths for a proper cleaning of the brush. And you were right about the lumps, the bottle was a bit old and almost all used up, I guess possibly what was left in...

A job for owners of Japanese saws.

Does that mean that this joint was made straight from the saw? IMHO this joint in itself is not remarkable without knowing how and the time it took to make. Did it take several weeks using machines, or a couple of hours using simple hand tools only?. And from watching a few videos, they seem to...

    Granite Chopping as Surface Plate

It will be as flat as your ruler! So if your ruler is not very flat... I presume you've checked in several places, including from corner to corner?

    Strange firmer chisels

I would think they are turning chisels which have long tangs and no bolster because the forces are different compared with normal chisels. You push a chisel along its length and the bolster resists that. But the force on a turning chisel is sideways, therefore you need a long tang and there's...

Cleaning brushes and Mylands Lacacote sanding sealer

Has anyone used Mylands Lacacote sanding sealer before? The product sheet says use meths to clean up but I get white lumps on the brush and the hair goes stiff. I also get white bits on the wood especially in the pores.

Does PVA glue go off by itself?

I had a bottle that still went off although I squeezed all the air out of the bottle before putting the cap back on. But that was after about 3 years, it went transparent and smelt of vinegar. It seems if you don't use a lot of glue, it's not worth getting the bigger bottles even though they're...

Does PVA glue go off by itself?

Does new PVA glue deteriorate by itself? If you open a new bottle and pour the glue into a smaller bottle so that there's almost no air inside the bottle, will the glue still go off?

    Patternmakers Plane

Why have one body with multiple detachable soles and irons? Is it to save space? Maybe even pattern makers didn't use these planes all that much?

Making a sofa (what wood to use / preventing warping)

Yes, there could be a lot of bracing or reinforements that doesn't show at normal viewing angles.

    United customer service

In all the reporting, they keep on saying "overbooked" but it wasn't! The plane was ready to fly with all the passengers on board, ie just about to take off when the airline at the last minute wanted 4 seats to fly 4 airline workers to another airport.
