Irwin XP Heavy Duty Bar Clamp - £12.50 (Back in stock)

The 18" variants at Wickes seem to have the swivel mechanism on the pads and they look more like the old version (also still in stock). I have a fair few of these and concur with the other comments on this thread, these are decent clamps and well worth the money. The XP versions with the alloy...

Wadkin PK 3 phase to single phase

Assuming that the VFD route is done properly, then a decent drive such as Invertek, Siemens, IMO, Parker, ABB, etc is not going to be cheap. That doesn't include electrical wiring, panel upgrade, Type B RCD, mounting fixings, etc. VFD sizing is based on full load amperage not HP, VFD's don't...

That's a really good price. Thanks for that.

Wadkin PK 3 phase to single phase

You could get a machine shop to make an adapter and probably still be financially better off, have a brand new motor and less effort all round.

Wadkin PK 3 phase to single phase

Be aware you will likely need an appropriate RCD if running an inverter. This might be useful. https://inverterdrive.com/howto/How-to-Use-Inverter-Drives-with-RDC-Earth-Leakage/ I run a few motors with VFDs and had to replace some MCB's for specific type RCD's because of tripping. It was a...

I’ve heard of inflation but this is ridiculous.

Not exactly the same thing is it? Have to agree with evildrome in that quantity of money theory, whilst kinda valid in some circumstances, is dependent on a lot of assumptions to work out in the long run. Value for one is not a constant which kicks the whole thing into touch.

    Help choosing circular saw

I think the HK is more rough timber orientated although you can get fine cuts - the HK can use TS blades. It's the combination of the HK and FSK rail that makes the HK more useful in certain situations, the HK is effectively latched onto the FSK rail maing it more convenient for 'one handed'...

    Help choosing circular saw

Be aware that FFX is doing a 15% off on ebay at the moment. A bare TS55 with Systainer is going for £343 and £435 with a 1400 track included. HK55 with track is £353.

I’ve heard of inflation but this is ridiculous.

I use a fair bit of IPA for cleaning stereolithographic printed parts. At one point in this mess I saw it sell on the auction sites for over £56 per litre!!!

    Help choosing circular saw

You could meet in the middle of a circular and a track saw with something like a Festool HK55 (with track), it's more for carpentry than 'woodworking' but worth being aware that it is an option. Would be faster for a shed build in my opinion. That said, a TS55 and track is probably a better...

I’ve heard of inflation but this is ridiculous.

Maybe they do have issues but they need to increase their costs by 300% to meet the demand of delivering thousands of boxes of gloves next day. We are in the middle of a global pandemic which in turn has caused the biggest UK economic slump in >300 years. If a supplier has to put the price of...

Help please Axminster Trade Series ST-480 Bench Mounted Drum/Brush Sander 230v

I assumed the ST version was discontinued given you can't buy it anymore. I appreciate there will be variants of the model design but I wouldn't assume parts are interchangeable. So.....yeah but no but yeah......... Good to hear this kind of feedback especially from a reputable source.

    MFT Question

For reference, I've used MDF tops for the odd workbench in the past, I used a paste wax on each occasion which worked a treat to keep it from absorbing too much moisture.

Attention tool geeks....whats your favourite framing nailer?

Yup, no idea why this isn't more standard and well known within timber framing. Ticks so many boxes and certainly a USP right now. They weren't that expensive when I spoke with them so not sure what the deal is. Mind you Scrails don't get the appropriate airtime either.

Attention tool geeks....whats your favourite framing nailer?

I spoke to them a few weeks before it launched as at the time I had a (quite large) project that they were perfect for, they were happy to discuss a demo gun and a batch of nails. Life took over and it never happened, but the next opportunity I have to justify one then it's going in the virtual...

Help please Axminster Trade Series ST-480 Bench Mounted Drum/Brush Sander 230v

Last one Axi sold with a known price was in August this year at £999 with cabinet and delivery (ebay listing). Given the cabinet was £360 in 2015 (as above) I suspect this went up by 2020. Even taking 2015 prices into account that makes the price of the unit well under £700 new. Second hand...

Attention tool geeks....whats your favourite framing nailer?

Without doubt, hands down go get a Fasco. They are the undisputed king of framing nailers. Reliable, bullet proof and built like a tank. They will also take Scrails which can be a game changer for some. They are certainly one of the most innovative of current manufactures of pneumatic fastener...

    From experience

Whilst I appreciate the spirit of the post in concentrating on making things as opposed to investing more resource to be in a position to make those things in the first place, I'm not sure it's all lost investment. I've enjoyed the process of making the environment I make things in and I...
