Adventures in metalwork and machine restoration!

I havent looked at this thread for some time so all i can say is "i am not worthy". I thought i was bad buying machines & selling a few, i realise i am but an amateur! Keep it up. By the way, dont want a big acdc tig welder do you?

No need to buy expensive circular saws any more!

There seems to be a bit of a fashion for appallingly dangerous tools & attachments at the moment, Adverts keep popping up on my facebook feed for Chainsaw & Circular saw attachments for angle grinders, Adverts always show men ripping up pallets or trees in stupid ways with no safety gear. You...

    Overheard conversations

Some years ago I knelt on a sharp copper nail in the bottom of a boat i was working on & got an infected bursitis of the knee. After several bouts of antibiotics that had no effect i found myself in A&E & shortly after was on a ward awaiting an emergency op to open up & wask out my knee. In the...

    Selling my fathers woodworking machines

I can sympathise as i have just finished clearing my Dads workshop. Difference is i have been in the boat trade for 40 years & have bought & sold a lot of machinery so know pretty well what stuff is worth. It might sound funny but i avoid ebay like the plague, it attracts the lowest common...

    Penetrating Expoy

I have spent most of my working life in the boat trade & have seen a lot of penetrating epoxies used on old boats. It is marketed as a cures all ills panacea & many people get sucked into this idea. It has its uses but for large items like boats it very rarely works & in fact often causes far...

    Withdrawn Startrite Saw Bench

My late Dads Startrite sawbench, he bought it new in 1958 & its done some work in its time, 8" blades, Tilting table. Its a cracking little single phase machine that has never been rusty & is in excellent condition, Pile of blades to go with it some are carbide. Its located in LA5 near...

Ripping Jarrah wood - which saw blade is best?

We used to use a lot of sleepers at our yacht club for blocking boats & some of these were Jarrah, i tried cutting some up once, The saw was a big old Dankaert circular saw with a 24" carbide rip blade & a 5 hp three phase motor. Even that found it hard work. Loads of embedded grit & simply not...

Axe throwing (is that a form of woodworking?)

When i was about 14 a friend & i found a couple of old hatchet heads, we put new handles on them & practiced axe throwing in the woods, no safety cages or stuff like that, we used trees as targets. We got pretty good. A couple of exiting richochets happened but the worst near miss was when...

    Startrite 351 Bandsaw Problems.

38mm is under 2" thick, a sharp 6tpi blade should go through that in no time. Sounds to me like the blade is inside out so the teeth are facing upwards, i have seen this done, we didnt let the bloke forget in a hurry!

    Another wood ID question.

How to move a heavy lathe

Dont forget to strap the lathe down when its in the van, worth checking for tie down points first! You do not want to go round a corner a bit sharpish & have it fall over in the back. I with a friend once moved a heavy steel workbench in the back of a Bedford Terrier, It fell over as we went...

How to move a heavy lathe

If its in good nick its a good price, if its got chucks & tooling its even better! Now to the sensible bit! Lathes are heavy, also they are very top heavy with the centre of gravity up over the tray. This means they are very easy to tip over. If this happens lots of expensive bits will break or...

    Plane casting

I have a similar but longer shoulder plane that is cast from brass or gunmetal. It is a finished piece & quite well made. It has decorated side panels that look for all the world like the pattern was cut from lino. Wording on one "Bristol 1943", I suspect it was an apprentice piece.

    How to do it.

I still have one just like that, It was my Dads, Its an absolute beast of a saw & still in use. I can never understand this trend of good tools turned into poncy lights.

Boley No. 3L screw cutting lathe restoration

For what its worth i have seen similar breaks welded up, its a matter of veeing out each side & preheating the cast iron parts. Rods are a nickel alloy if i remember correctly. Alternatively as its basically just a flat plate with bosses you could cut a plate from steel plate & weld two bushes...
