    Is this asbestos?

My late mums house was extended in the 70's & roofed in a very similar board called Denatherm, As said above it looks like Stramit but there were quite a few manufacturers ,Many of these types of board did in fact contain asbestos in varying quantities. I could find virtually no info on the...

Correct size of concrete block foundation?

It is always best to be nice to your building inspector, when we built our large extension we had two, One was an ex builder himself & was good as gold, the other was rather more officious but okay. A friend crossed swords with the same bloke a year later, while digging footings he argued the...

Electricity pole - Cutting, splitting and using an old pole to make posts

Telegraph poles are heavily pressure treated with creosote, we use a lot of them for boat jetties at our yacht club, often the centre rots out leaving the outer shell about three inches thick, takes about 40 years to do this mind! Cutting them is a pain, there may not appear to be much much...

    Looking for ideas

Heres another idea, bloke near here runs a swimming pool company & often replaces sand filters, they can be quite large & are usually made of fibreglass, usually they go in a skip. Cut them in half & block off the pipework holes & you have two planters.

Looking for a type of file but I don't know what it's called.

Abrafile was the blade it went into two holders that fit a standard hacksaw frame, we used to use them in schools, I was told that they are no longer manufactured which would be a shame as they were very handy.

    Kids

The Kevin B wilson song The builder seems appropriate! But seriously the lack of parental control goes back several generations at least, Corporal punishment was banned in schools in 1986 35 years ago, those kids are now parents & even grandparents. I saw this in my last job as a D&T technician...

    Car purchasing advice UK

Im curious, How many miles has the CRV done? My wife just sold her 23 year old one with 176,000 miles on it & it was still going strong. At 23 years old & that mileage it was starting to become an annual wonder what the mot would require next. It was usually suspension joints that sort of thing...

    Festool itch

I got bitten a couple of years ago with a festool delta sander, i bought a clarke for one job but it was so noisy & vibrated so badly i bought a festool, it was brilliant & i was converted, I now have a ts 55 tracksaw & likewise its accuracy was a revelation. I would only buy their stuff for a...

Is there anyone who prefer wooden planes to metal ones?

I have a German horned plane made by Essingler & Abt in the early years of the 20th century, once restored it was a revelation, it has a thin high quality blade that takes & holds a fearsome edge & once i got the hang of adjusting it with a small toffee hammer was easy to adjust. The design...

Grinder Chainsaw Disc attachment Safety alert

I am old enough to remember seeing an article in which the inventor of the arbortech woodcarver told how he welded a length of chainsaw chain onto a disc then redesigned it as it was so dangerous. Obviously there are manufacturers with no such qualms!

Grinder Chainsaw Disc attachment Safety alert

Basically they are saying dont use cheapo chainsaw toothed discs knocked up out of chainsaw chain stuck on a disc for use in a grinder. The other tool is an arbortech woodcarver, they have safety humps between the teeth to stop digging in but can still be quite exciting to use, i have one but...

Grinder Chainsaw Disc attachment Safety alert

Just saw this on a D&T technicians group on fb, Goverment just issued a safety alert on grinder chainsaw disc attachments, may be of interest to some of us, & may save someone from removing bits of themselves...

    Canada 50C/120F

It is interesting that after the 911 attacks in New York that there was an immediate suspension of air travel across the USA & this was said by scientists to account for a 2 degree jump in temperature in the following days. This has been put down to the contrails from jets at high altitude...

    Marmite

My last job was as a D&T technician in a school, MDF was a commonly used material for the kids & there were a lot of dust issues. Personally i would have tried not to use it but it wasnt my choice! Management wouldnt / didnt address the issue so i walked. I use it for pattern making for grp...

I'm worried about what people will think after I die...

A bloke i know is very wealthy, he is absolutely paranoid about money to the point of being an awful miser, investments everywhere & wont make a will "In case my wife finds out how much i have", I pity her & their kids if he pops his clogs unexpectedly. There are no pockets in a shroud.

    Boat builders' thread

No, Unfortunately the name & history of my one is lost. The sewn contruction tells us Saunders built her as he was the only one who used it. She was basically derelict for about 40 years before i got her, we know her history back to an owner Capt Walker just before WW2, prior to that nothing. I...

    Boat builders' thread

One thing i learnt over many years, there is very little difference in the cost of keeping & maintaining a Wooden or GRP boat if they are in good condition. Where people fall down is that a wooden boat MUST have its regular maintenance without fail. A GRP boat can be left for years go green & a...
