    Straightening a twisted frame

According to Wikipedia - I accept not always the best reference: A torsion box consists of two thin layers of material (skins) on either side of a lightweight core, usually a grid of beams. It is designed to resist torsion under an applied load. A hollow core door is probably the most common...

    Straightening a twisted frame

If the two skins are glued and screwed to the frame whilst held flat, would the door act like a torsion box and resist twisting. I understand this is why most cheaper doors tend to be flat - not the quality of materials specified by B&Q or Wickes etc -but because of the way they are...

a new era of low cost, accessible and efficient heating?

My initial reaction is snake oil. I accept the principal that heating the person not the space may create a similar level of comfort for less energy use. although a comparison may better be made with heated clothing. However there seems to be no efficiency gain (300%+ for heat pump technology)...

Royal Mail - complete ban on bladed items from 22nd April

Guidance by the government has the following Guidance : It should be noted that even if an article is not considered to have a blade or point within the meaning of section 139 of the Criminal Justice Act 1988, it could still be an offensive weapon under section 1 of the Prevention of Crime Act...

    Moving a wood burner.

I would own up to having little knowledge of wood burners, but a horizontal flue (even if later fixed more securely) looks to me like a disaster waiting to happen. A quick google shows horizontal is not recommended - and whilst I could accept that for pragmatic reasons in ones own workshop a...

Royal Mail - complete ban on bladed items from 22nd April

That they will no longer deliver bladed items seems clear. But I am unclear why - because: is it danger to personnel from improperly packaged sharp objects, they can't check the age of the recipient for restricted items, the blade may subsequently be used in a crime in which they may be held...

Just to stir the pot, has anyone noticed...

Unambiguous criminality is not a pipe dream. Guilt in criminal cases needs to be proved "beyond all reasonable doubt". In both cases (Colston and climate protests) there is no ambiguity in that criminal damage occurred, and in one case (possibly both) the defendants even admitted such!

Just to stir the pot, has anyone noticed...

There is a fundamental difference - making moral judgements running counter to unambiguous criminality (wrong), and making judgements where the legislation is either absent or inconclusive (entirely reasonable).

Just to stir the pot, has anyone noticed...

Jurors can make whatever judgement they want irrespective of the facts of a case. Judges have very little right to overrule juries. In the case of the climate protestors causing criminal damage, the jury clearly supported their actions and chose not to convict. Similarly with those who...

Just to stir the pot, has anyone noticed...

The courts make judgements based on precise analysis of agreements. If this is inconclusive they may examine evidence about the intention of the parties. Moral judgements will be inconsistent. Complexity arises as "tweaks" to improve fairness and change behaviours have been made without...

Worcestershire newbie bowl turner needs a trainer for half a day

You may find it worthwhile looking up your local woodturning club if you have not already done so. Most run meetings with demonstrations by skilled/professionals. Members are likely to be relative starters (like yourself) to the very capable, are usually willing to share knowledge, technique...

The economy is NOT a closed system. MV = PQ Money x Number of transactions = Price x Production The fallacy you re-iterated depends on Q being fixed. Which it clearly is not. Have you heard of the Witcher Conjecture? I have not heard of the Witcher conjecture - nor it seems has Google in an...

Royal Mail - complete ban on bladed items from 22nd April

The technology exists to scan every package similar to airport security - x-ray and metal detectors. I am quite certain AI (either now or in the very near future) would enable 100% scanning with high levels of accuracy at low cost. For entirely legitimate users of bladed tools it is an...

New product for drilling straight holes.

I recall that some years ago a way of drilling at 90 degrees to a surface was to drill through the centre of a CD (remember those) If the reflection on the drill and the drill itself were straight all was well. If the reflection appeared to at an angle to the drill then the drill was other...

Limitarianism applied to multi-billionaire and future trillionaires may make very little difference to those at the bottom of the economic pile. The mega wealthy spend whatever they choose - take a billion away from a trillion, consumption is unaffected. Their wealth is digits in a database -...

    Eye opening experience

Sadly the world is full of charlatans. Much of this thread has dealt with those exploiting the elderly - charging an excessive price for either substandard or unnecessary work. The practice is not confined to itinerant roofers and driveway specialists. There are plenty of "white collar"...

Advice for Making a Parquet Desktop

I would assume (possibly wrongly) that the parquet would need to be mounted on a board the full size of the planned desktop to provide rather more strength than edge glued parquet alone. If glued and pinned (from the reverse) to (say) 18mm ply, any movement will be very limited/zero. The...

    Severance negotiations

I don't know what job you do nor the company or business for which you work. There may be some obvious reasons why they may want to understand your intentions, assuming your current and possibly prospective company compete within the same local market. They may be concerned about losing...

    Buying from EU

We have left the EU. Completely foolish in my view but it happened. The key is what happens now, not playing blame games. The probability of re-joining any time on terms similar to those we left in the next decade is close to zero. The UK in supplicant mode would have limited negotiating...

A report by the Kings Fund on waiting lists - 2021 so does not properly reflect the full impact of Covid or industrial action: Kings fund This makes interesting reading - the major takeaway messages are that: looking at a single measure of waiting lists is utterly superficial the very valid...
