    Joke thread

Useful odd facts about time: A microFortnight is approximately 1 second (*) There are about 10 million Pi seconds in a year. (*) actually about 1.2 seconds - microFortnights were used in what was a very popular operating system (OpenVMS) back in the day to set the value of the TIMEPROMTWAIT...

    Source Of Oak

Green oak is subtle and quick to anger! It's very heavy to work with and is unforgiving on nice tools like planer-thicknessers. It moves and can shrink a lot with time if allowed to dry at all... We had a special old huge PT just for green oak - kept the decent one for kiln-dried. I used to...

    Sharpening tracksaw blades

Yep. See the post I linked to above. I sent off 6 blades and they came back a week later (in the same packaging) all protected by that funny waxy plastic (see the photos). There was a Festool, a Trend and several other good ones in there. They charge per tooth and repairs/replacement TC tips are...

    Sharpening tracksaw blades

Dooleys are still there (just checked) though their web site is down. J.J. Dooley 13-14 Upper Brents, Faversham ME13 7DL 01795 591100 https://g.co/kgs/FtfegU

    Sharpening tracksaw blades

With all due respect, if you have bought decent quality blades they are certainly worth sending off for repair and sharpening. Even missing or chipped TC teeth are quite cheap to repair. I saved up a bunch of blades and sent them off - see P/T blade sharpening About 12 quid a blade and they're...

Tung oil, skinning in the can

Pure Nitrogen is about 3% lighter than air at STP; Argon is denser than air, but probably more expensive than Nitrogen. Having said that, a quick squirt of N2 into the can and whip the lid on will work just fine - anything that is relatively non-reactive and displaces Oxygen is good. In my old...

    Bargain of the weekend.

Good price... however when joining stained glass lead Came you normally just wipe the joint with a bit of tallow and use normal lead solder (non cored, 40:60 or 50:50 Sn to Pb) with a chunky iron (100w). 60:40 is normally used for finer work, e.g. foil or electronics etc. and the 40:60 where you...

    Which brand of air nailer?

Another vote for the Makita AF506. I've been using it to panel a sauna and other jobs... Really accurate, repeatable, no jams... Really nice to use and gets in tight corners. Love it.

    How good is this...

For me, pretty clear it's all freehand, no CNC involved... Looks like an ordinary router with the custom base he made. Very clever. The only handheld CNC router that maybe could do that is the Shaper Origin which is pretty huge...

    Looking for a shoulder plane...

I already have had a Clifton 420 for many many years, but was thinking about the 3110, mainly for its flexibility. Obviously, combination tools like the 3110 are sometimes a compromise. so I was wondering what folk thought about any possible alternatives in that price bracket? (around 200...

    Building my own workshop

Yes - we are looking at worst-case fault conditions, which is what you should be doing. If Appliance A of phase L1 develops a fault and appliance B on phase L2 simultaneously has a fault, you have the possibility of 400V between them - enough to kill - it's the current that kills, but double...

    female plug

They do, and most annoyingly so. The HC260 implementation has the socket facing downwards - it does not have a retaining clip and is friction-fit retained only. Unfortunately, the friction is not that great so the plug can just drop out with relative ease. Replacing it with something...

    Building my own workshop

Definitely not good practice, but I'm not a sparks - I deal in uV and picoAmps... Was the 17ed where the two metre rule was dropped? I'm not sure the current edition actually forbids having outlets on different phases in a single domestic room, but I'd be pretty cross if that was found in any...

    Building my own workshop

That would scare me. If you have two bits of kit in the same room on different phases, you can have around 415V volts between them... Maybe they are far apart, but folk use extension cords... That's potentially (!) a very serious zap!!

    The realities of tool ownership...

    Help!!! Hornets!!!

A beekeeper writes: European hornets, which these will be, are pretty docile unless you really annoy them. They are dangerous to bees as they predate colonies, but normally avoid humans. Unless you're a beekeeper with hives nearby or they are genuinely presenting a risk to you and yours, I'd...

    A warning, cheap tut.

Anker are generally excellent. Used them for years. I've taken their power bricks apart and they are well made IMHO with the correct protection (I'm an electronics engineer by degree). They are Chinese too...

16th. Century Venetian gilded tabernacle frame with hand cut and carved mouldings.

Whenever would be great! We were at the V&A last week for the Epic Iran exhibition. Extraordinary. Spent hours in there and really want to do a bit more reading and return for a closer inspection of certain exhibits. Spent years in the Gulf region but for political reasons, never got to Iran - a...
