    Ground screw advice needed please

Considering using ground screws for an upcoming workshop build. I have to be careful with my back and am trying to build without dealing with too many heavy products. Also need a quick build - just built a 5m x 3m studio which took over a year! The workshop will be fairly high spec though with...

Old Stanley’s or new Quangsheng planes? Which do I need?

I shall do as you suggest. I have been very fortunate to find a great set of bench planes that should more than cover my needs for now. A couple of them need a bit of cosmetic work and a bit of tuning up. You feel more invested in the tool if you spend some time yourself working on it. I will...

Old Stanley’s or new Quangsheng planes? Which do I need?

Thank you all for your contributions. It seems as though I have been gifted a no4 1/2 which will make a perfect smoothing plane. I am very grateful and excited to try that out. I have also managed to acquire a no5 and no7 so I think with my old no4 as well i should be sorted for bench planes...

Note taken, I will try and restrain myself! Thank you. Actually restraining is no fun so not making any promises.

Old Stanley’s or new Quangsheng planes? Which do I need?

Thank you all for taking the time to respond and help me, feel free to make any further suggestions. I am very much leaning towards some vintage Stanley’s now. I can buy and try without loosing any money because they will probably be worth more in five years time. This makes it far less...

Old Stanley’s or new Quangsheng planes? Which do I need?

I’m new to woodworking (just getting started, but expect it to be an enduring hobby) and can’t afford a number of Lie Nielsen or Veritas planes. Would like to buy once and be happy. Interested in making everything from small boxes to pieces of furniture. I’m torn between building up a set of...

Advice needed please on building a small wood workshop

Thanks for your advice. It’s going to look very strange if I increase its width from 2.4m. I could potentially make it a bit longer, maybe 6m instead of 4.8m. I do have a plan if I need more space in the future.

Would these be worth using to hold the hardcore at the base of the pillar ‘foundations’?

Advice needed please on building a small wood workshop

I want a decent surface on the floor, but am planning on OSB for walls and ceiling.

Advice needed please on building a small wood workshop

Thank you, there do seem to be water-resistant forms of chipboard, but I am still leaning towards plywood.

Advice needed please on building a small wood workshop

Thank you Martin it’s very reassuring to get someone else’s view, is chipboard as strong and water resistant as plywood? I will draw up another diagram for the roof when I’ve given it more thought. I would dig down to reasonably hard soil and use 4-6” of hardcore.

Can you get away without joist hangers for the floor?

Advice needed please on building a small wood workshop

This is the plan at the moment. Any comments? Is it worth putting a vapour barrier (plastic sheet) between the floor joints and the plywood? And run it up the outside of the bottom 4x2. NB: The weed barrier would go between the blocks (not as shown). Also just noticed I haven’t drawn the OSB...

Advice needed please on building a small wood workshop

Thank you, Ali Dymock’s series is very thorough but a bit higher spec than I was planning for this build. Trying to work out where I can reasonably cut corners and expenses.

Advice needed please on building a small wood workshop

Thank you. Did you not use OSB on the outside of the studs as well as the inside? Is the breathable membrane (TYVEK Housewrap) strong enough to hold in the rock wool? It sounds as though the rock wool works well. I will look out for secondhand windows and door.
