Just another box, but it’s my first one.

This is brilliant feedback, thank you. The walls are 9mm, and the lid and base are 15mm (I thought the lid was a bit bulky). I’m a long way off in terms of craftman ship from producing a ‘fine’ box! I shall aim for thinner pins with my dovetails next time, is that what you mean or are you...

Just another box, but it’s my first one.

Thank you so much, I’ll definitely try to hide the base on another box. This base is the same thickness as the lid and chiselled down around the edges to give a more aesthetic appearance of a thin base. Not sure I’m up to mitred dovetails just yet but will keep them in mind for when I improve...

Just another box, but it’s my first one.

Thank you. If you are talking about the light coloured widely spaced lines at about 40 degrees they are part of the grain. They’re a bit unusual aren’t they? There’s definitely no saw marks because I created the bevel by raising the opposite side on a shooting board. It was a nightmare trying to...

Just another box, but it’s my first one.

Newbie here. I’ve have made a pencil tray before (I got the dovetails the wrong way round - the pins were much wider than the tails!) but otherwise this is my first attempt at making something ‘nice’. It’s about 6” x 4”. It’s ALL hand tools because I don’t have any machines. I used a Stanley...

    Bench Grinder Advice please

Thank you all for your replies. Sorry, I’ve been away and haven’t had a chance to respond. It sounds like the bigger, slower and wetter, the better! The one I was interested in on Marketplace has sold now, I’ll keep my eyes out for another one.

    Bench Grinder Advice please

Looking for a grinder to re-establish primary bevels on my old plane blades and chisels etc. Looking at a second hand RSBG8 for £70. I can’t see myself spending more than £100 ish. Any suggestions or advice would be really appreciated, thank you.

    Dust mask advice please

That sounds like very good advice and information too, thank you for taking the time.

    Dust mask advice please

Hi all, I’m new to woodworking and have just set up temporarily in a 6x8ft shed. There is little ventilation so I’m concerned about breathing in too much dust. I’m just using hand tools mostly but occasionally get out a circular saw to make a couple of rip cuts. Just working on small projects at...

    Not quite a workshop but....

Just built a shed extention to my studio - just a 8'x6' lean to. Going to store lawnmower, garden tools, bikes etc. The floor is 18mm plywood. What would be the best paint to use as a waterproof hard wearing finnish. I've got half a tin of Black Jack's Bitumen paint left, would that be okay...

Quick question, so I can get on with the job.

Thank you everyone, I did clean most of it off with water and a wet towel. Seems to have stuck down fine. Phew.

Quick question, so I can get on with the job.

Really, that’s a big job, and a very awkward one too. It’s on the roof ‘resting/settling’ before gluing down. I’ve done a bigger EPDM roof before and I done remember having this issue. Would it just wipe off with a wet cloth do you think? Thank you both for your help

Quick question, so I can get on with the job.

I am about to glue down some EPDM on a sheet roof. It has got this white chalky/metallic powder all over it (both sides). Just wondering if it will prevent the adhesive from working?

    Lighting for small workshop

What colour temperature tights would you recommend for a workshop? I was going to use something fairly warm like 3000k. Is it just a preference thing or are there any technical considerations?

Do you think this is Oak or Pine?

    Agreed, thank you.

    Couple of questions

Thank you, good thoughts. If my woodworking requires some heavy machines in the future I will have to relocate, and I have a plan for that should it happen. I’m looking for the simplest (and cheapest) build, having just built a studio and injured my back in the process. I’m surprised that oak...

    Couple of questions

Good idea, if I were to use concrete I could probably get away with just doing half the floor area. It’s a small workshop so will need to be able to move the bench from time to time.

Do you think this is Oak or Pine?

I wondered if the construction would give anything away. The bench top doesn’t seem to have been crafted with the same care as the base. The pegged mortise and tenon joints seem to be holding up well.

Do you think this is Oak or Pine?

Oak or Pine? It’s in the UK How can you tell? I think the large cracks a typical of oak but I have no experience.

    Couple of questions

I am stewing over how to build a small workshop (16x8ft). I want to avoid a concrete floor but want something sturdy enough to take the repetitive knocking of hand tool woodworking. The ground is about two foot of soil on top of a chalk bed. I am hoping to build something that will last 30yrs or...
