    The new hammer

I had one of those, they called it their Weight Forward hammer, I never got on with it. The handle was slightly curved and to me the striking face felt to be at the wrong angle. I actually broke a bone in the back of my hand with it. I was using it with a chisel, didn't hit the chisel squarely...

    Budget hardpoint saw for carpentry

I've never been a fan of coated blades, I found they don't seem to feel as sharp when new as the uncoated ones, maybe things have changed and I should give them another try.

How many metres do you need? You could always go old school...

    The new hammer

I've used metal shafted Estwings for years, bought my first one about 35 years ago, expensive at the time but it was the hammer to be seen with so had to get one. I initially got a 16oz leather handled but soon added a couple of heavier rubber handled ones to the collection. I used them daily...

    Budget hardpoint saw for carpentry

Not a cheap option but I like the Bahco Ergo handle system, the handle is comfy in use and the blades are easily swapped, blades are available in different sizes and tooth counts. Sounds gimmicky but it is a decent quality product, prices are all over the place though but there are often deals...

Your favourite thing you have made from reclaimed timber 🤔 📸

Some friends converted a barn behind their house into a garage, gym and outdoor entertaining space and asked me to use some of the old barn roof timbers to make this table and benches. Their design and certainly not fine joinery but I like the fact it was part of the old barn.

    Induction Mitre Saw

I think a new decent quality brushed mitre saw might solve your problem. I have 2 mitre saws, a little Makita and a Festool Kapex. Despite the Makita being much smaller it's also much louder and nowhere near as nice to use, it really kicks into life when you pull the trigger and even the brake...

    Oak picture rail joints

As I used architrave that was square on the back it just looked like a piece of wood butted up to another piece of wood on an angle if that makes any sense. Where the architrave was square your picture rail has the roundover and rebate, this will need scribing and should end up looking like it...

    Oak picture rail joints

I said earlier in this thread that for ease I would mitre the 135 degree corners but to be honest I can't remember the last time I did an angled scribe so thought I would have a quick try to see how it would turn out. I used a piece of MDF Torus architrave which is a similar mould to the...

    Oak picture rail joints

Think I would just mitre the two obtuse corners rather than scribing, maybe I'm just lazy :dunno:

    Kapex Accuracy out the box?

I think the only thing I would miss on the 88 would be the spring loaded bevel, I do like that.

    Kapex Accuracy out the box?

The 120 has a setting where you can cut 120mm high boards (for example skirting board) stood vertically so you can mitre it rather than laying it flat and making a bevel cut (if that makes any sense) hence the name, the 88 doesn't have this feature so only cuts 88mm high. Also think the 88...

    Floating stair treads

What size are the treads? Quick very rough maths, if 1m long x 300mm deep x 50mm thick at £5k a cubic metre that comes to only £75 per tread?

    Kapex Accuracy out the box?

The handle orientation thing is down to personal preference, I like the handle in line with the blade, to me it feels like using a handsaw and as everything is working in line it feels like there is less chance of deflection. I also use mine left handed probably 30% of the time and the...

Restoring one of the great classics. Robinson mortiser.

I never miss a chance to post a photo of my Robinson mortiser as it is a thing of beauty, mine is the smaller chisel only version but I see a few similarities.

    ...... without paying the earth.

I use the same ones as @Distinterior but as most of my doors are in frame I use the little holders to mount them rather than drilling a hole in the carcass. I normally get them from here https://www.trade-hinges.co.uk/handleless-door-systems-51-c.asp

    Kapex Accuracy out the box?

Mine needed a slight adjustment out of the box but has been accurate ever since (10+ years). It is a nice saw, I think details like the dust extraction, work clamp, angle finder etc make it worth the extra.

    Festool OF2200 vs 1400

I have an OF1400 and it does everything I need, great router (y) The only negative I hear about it is the copy ring mounting system, it just snaps in (think the OF220 is the same) and can have a bit of movement plus it can't be adjusted if not central.
