Folkstone Fixings (FFX) placed into Administration

I spent loads with them years ago mainly on Festool, they used to be by far the cheapest. I like to try and support my local retailers but the price difference often pushed me towards FFX. I was told that they used to sell track saws etc for less than they paid for them but because of the...

    Box sash windows

Bradshaw Joinery did a full series on making one, I haven't watched it but he knows his stuff and generally gives good advice.

    Surface Planer Good Deal?

It looks a bit scruffy but if it all works as it should and just needs a good clean I reckon the price is okay, you could make them an offer but I wouldn't miss out on it for the sake of a few quid. Part of the fun of old machinery is giving it a good clean and service when you first get it, it...

Pick n mix shelf for the local Deli, fun little job. I make simple things like this for them and they never charge me for coffee, everybody is happy :)

    How is this done?

Use a Stanley knife to trace around it then use the knife line to register the tip of your chisel for the final cut.

Sash Windows - Weights, Spiral Balances, and.....

I've used the spring balances a few times and found them okay, not as nice as weights and cords but useful in some situations like your side sashes. Funnily enough a customer of mine has just had a few sash windows fitted and was commenting on the draught coming through the pulleys. He had some...

£1,000 budget for a planer thicknesser - what would you buy?

That's the one I had, in fact it's still in my store room ready for when I downsize. The fence on mine had a slight bow in it but was straight near the blades which is where it matters and you had to keep an eye on the outfeed table as it didn't always return to the correct position after...

£1,000 budget for a planer thicknesser - what would you buy?

I had one of the 10" planer thicknessers that are rebadged by Axminster, Charnwood etc for about 4 years (bought new) and it was actually okay. Maybe I was lucky and got a good one because you do hear horror stories, I had to change some bearings after about 3 years but it did get a lot of use...

Cost difference between S4S and rough hardwoods

I don't know how anyone working with timber manages without a planer thicknesser, I'd say it's essential if you are considering making doors and windows. It looks like the door @Gus900 is making is being made from Accoya. Accoya is much easier to work than Oak, it's lighter, softer, straighter...

I snaffled a like new pair of these off Vinted for £15, absolute bargain :) They are very comfy and lightweight, expensive new but definitely a cut above the cheaper ones I've had...

    The new hammer

The rubber grip on my Estwing was rock hard and also worn down so was quite skinny with no shape, it did start to feel like you were just hitting things with a metal bar. Here it is compared to an older one I have which hasn't had much use as it's too heavy, didn't realise the colour difference.

    The new hammer

When I was looking for a new arm friendly hammer I did come across the term "Estwing elbow" a few times.

You might realise from some of my other posts that I'm making a kitchen for a customer which is being done in stages as this works well for both of us. Today I fitted a wall unit I've made, just waiting on the glass and misplaced screws for the catches. The catches are a bit form over function...

    Favourite hand plane and why

I have 2 favourites, my two sons bought them for me which is why they are my favourite and choosing just one would be the equivalent of picking a favourite child........ Had them years, not even sure of the make, I would guess Quangsheng or similar :dunno:

    Awkward Space Storage Solutions?

If you like systainers there are still plenty of used SYS 5 on Ebay at £20 each, you could maybe design something around them. I keep thinking of getting a few and converting some to have drawers or be open topped etc
