Wacky things you've made and don't know what to do with!

Repurpose as a nativity and donate to local church, or thank it for its service keeping you sane and burn it.

    Gel filled sandbags

The thing I don’t understand about them is if they have a density greater than water, if they don’t they surely they will float away. If you have a stack of them above the water line then the ones above will weigh down the ones below, but as the water rises that effect gets less and less.

    Is this oak?

I’ve changed my vote to ash, out of bright light the clear tell tale for me is image two in the second post, you can see the two tones of lighter and darker wood that is often seen in ash.

    Is this oak?

First picture looks ashy but it is very dark, it could be olive ash but it would have to have been a wide board to see that with no lighter sap wood. Another option is chestnut (sweet), which looks very like oak but has no medullary rays.

    Wadkin ags 10 Lock Nut

I’ve had a few of those project tools, have to buy other project tools to fix the first one, eventually via circular tool fixing you return to the first and get it running!

    Strange Wine?!

It has gotten much better in the last 10yrs, the oil industry has calmed down considerably. We’ve had a lot less price rises in houses and the service industries. People used to commute in for labouring etc but the differential to the rest of Scotland and uk is now no longer worth it. The ‘bad’...

    Strange Wine?!

Nowt so queer as folk, as my mum would say. In France I do drink French wine, but in the uk seldom as I find it overpriced for something good.

Post a photo of the last thing you made

A couple of busy days in the shed and the sash ‘boxes’ are done. Boxes used loosely as none of them are true boxes. Really pleased with how they have turned out. Parting rail, weight pocket, pulley cutouts all to be completed. Two side boxes and central box for the bay Half a box! Odd window...

Secret Santa 2024 (under new management)

It was something I was concerned about the first year I took part. I’ve made something most years but one year purchased a small item instead as time was not on my side. I’ve received a real mix over the years from an old tools parcel to a set of hand made marking knives. I’ve come to accept...

Advice on running electrics to shed

Ran my shed from an extension cable for nearly 4 years. Had proper electrics installed earlier this year, so much nicer to have a light switch and some sockets in sensible places. Use an extension to get by for now but plan to get the electrics done sooner rather than later.

Getting on with the new sash bay window in the attic. All the timber is milled up to the correct size, lots of hamster bedding! Using unsorted redwood for the whole build and really pleased with the quality so far. Pretty tight rings and lovely and resinous, shed smells delightful. Fitz

    Wadkin ags 10 Lock Nut

I can’t remember the details but there have been previous posts on this exact same thing, a new nut for a Wadkin AGS. I don’t think anyone found a supplier of an after market nut that would fit. A good search on these forums may find the posts.

    Current shed project

Brilliant, no dilly dallying about with endless posts about how to do this and that, just straight on with the build, bloody marvellous! Looks great.

Kitchen making and extraction hood height

The front edge of mine is at my eye line, so I guess about 170-175cm from the floor, when I’m cooking it feels out the way, wouldn’t want it lower.

A recommendation for conspiracists/people who understand things the rest of us don't

‘Confirmation bias’, and the internet feeds you unending streams of confirmation.

    Wadkin PK riving advice please

Long rips on thick or twisted timber are the ones where I’ve had the saw cut closeup. If the blade guard is on the riving knife then not having it would be my bigger concern.

A recommendation for conspiracists/people who understand things the rest of us don't

The internet, and social media (FB, UT, Insta, TT, etc) is the world's largest echo chamber, whatever you shout into it through your search bar and mouse click it feeds you ever more of the same. If you are a loon it used to be difficult to find like minded individuals, now there is a virtual...

Circular Saw for cutting Oak Sleepers - recommendations needed

Even if the saw will only do 40mm from each side it only leaves an easy 20mm to cut with a hand saw. My bigger concern for you is using sleepers for your workbench, if the sleepers are green ie not dried they will split and move considerably as they dry. I bought some sleepers a good few years...

    Workbench Build

Having spent weeks stripping lathe and plaster and planning to remake the bedroom window I decided it would be easier if I had the workbench semi functional rather than in pieces taking up space in the shed. So I’ve drilled the end frames ready for drawboring, shaped the vice chop, and planed...
