My Woodwork Journey is about to begin - Total Beginner - I may need your advice.

My advice would be don't overthink it, pick a project, find some cheap wood and have a go making something. A good source of cheap wood is old furniture, use GumTree to find free tables, wardrobes etc and chop them up. I searched Lincoln + 30miles and this popped up, free old wardrobe bound to...

How can I put a dozen or so old tyres to use?

Stupid auto correct capitalised the words and I only noticed after posting, it made me smile so I left it be, looks like you saw the joke also.

    Wadkin ags 10 Lock Nut

The thread profile I drew is in the nut. The shaft has a square thread that is clear from the picture. The nut, from the best I can tell, does not have a totally square form.

    Wadkin ags 10 Lock Nut

Been out to the shed and taken a bunch of photos and measurements best I can of the nut from my AGS10 it’s an early model with the spindle housing integral to the swing arm. From what I can tell the thread on the spindle is square, the nut definitely has a narrower root than crest. Fitz

Thoughts on sash window costs & time

If you search for made to measure sash windows there are online sites where a 1mx1.8m weighted box sash window in hardwood costs £2k incl Vat. It took me about 20hrs to make three sash boxes including milling the sill profiles, I had previously made a single window and making three boxes only...

Can someone please identify this wood?

Wood blocks 02 are some kind of softwood, pine or fir, growth rings and red heart wood vs light sap wood are the giveaway. Blocks 03 look like rubberwood with the black flecks on the light wood. Blocks 04/05/06 look sapele'ish' with colour and grain.

How can I put a dozen or so old tyres to use?

Filled with dirt/gravel they make a Great Wall, can be covered in clay so you can see them. Stack 2/3 and a post in the middle and filled with dirt/gravel they will act as a great counter weight, giving you a good upright for a structure.

    Flood proofing new shed

Beware making it watertight will create a boat, a 4mx4m shed in 1m of water will need to weigh more than 16tonnes before it doesn’t float! Raising off floor and storing stuff up high sound very sensible, also not using absorbing insulation or glass wool, and having the base ventilated...

    Machine Base---advise needed

Yes would need with four swivelling castors. All my bases have two fixed and two swivel, the make I have do not make a four swivel version so can’t recommend a make. Mine uses a ply board (self supplied) rather than a frame and the kit bolts to the corners.

Can I make all usual structures with just wood from my small woodland?

If you Google "roundwood woodshed" there are some good images. Some of the structures are using substantial timbers but others look to be in the 6-10cm range. Most of these look to be screwed rather than joinery but walking before running is likely sensible.

New Workshop - Saved around £12-15k

A training bike will develop lots of moisture, if the space is well sealed this moisture will be trapped in the room and condense on surfaces as the temperature in the room drops after use. After a heavy hand planing session the inside of my workshop windows will gather condensation as the room...

Can I make all usual structures with just wood from my small woodland?

Building structures from thinner trees 6-10cm in diameter and leaving them mainly round, and only working the joining surfaces, will be much easier than trying to take a large tree and work it into dimensioned timber. On woodland that has not been managed you may have areas of woodland that...

    DIY rough sawn to PAR

I did it in three steps: 1- with the sill flat on the table saw a cut to the depth of the 'upstand' between lower and upper sill slopes 2 - table saw bevel cut to remove lower sill material. 3 - table saw bevel cut to remove upper sill material The depth of cut on my table saw was not...

Looks like a great deal, and a pretty cheap way to get started in 'routering'.

    DIY rough sawn to PAR

I recently made sash window sills from rough saw stock. I used a surface planer and thicknesser to machine straight at square, then a table saw and hand plane to add the sill profiles. You could take the sawn stock to flat and square with had tools but it would be some work. You can use a...

    A hearty “Hello!”

Don’t get carried away with the workbench, knock something functional up asap with a vice for work holding. I started my workbench project 7 yrs ago and it’s still not finished!
