    Led light panels

I made some wooden 'brackets', a simple wooden block as a stand off from the ceiling with a slot on the side for the edge of the panel. They weigh next to nothing.

Buying a fully electric used car

A balanced view on the internet who would have thought it existed........ ;) With points 6 and 7 being very impactful to an individual consumer there will always be stories involving these issues that circulate around. The person this happened to will be rightly upset and likely very vocal...

And in today's post bag we have...

We get a few each year for Georgi and Elsie (14 years since they moved out), we don't get many Xmas cards so the go on the mantlepiece anyhow and make us feel more popular than we are!

Knock down Domino joinery. Great idea?

The mortices and tenons on my workbench are effectively the same design as they are drawbored without glue, i just couldn't decide what glue to use so I didn't, it also means I can drive out the pegs if I should ever need/want to. However my joinery is considerably more chunky, 125mm legs, 35mm...

I also do not edge glue straight off the machine, I sand the edge with a flat block rather than plane it though.

    Sawstop demo and thoughts

Also working in a high hazard industry with high integrity safety systems I have also wondered how they have addressed the issue of reliability, I wonder if there could be something to learn. The routine testing of these system needs plant downtime and not infrequently causes incidents itself.

    Sedgwick CP planer query

On my surface planer (Wadkin BFT9) the workpiece comes off the planer with no snipe that is of consequence. If I hold the workpiece up to a raking light then I can normally discern the snipe but it is less than will be sanded off during final finishing. My machine does however have easy (hand...

    Sedgwick CP planer query

I've no experience with spiral heads, but I can't think why the drag method would not work. It looks like you have slightly more drag on the side nearest the fence, is the snipe worse when surfacing a board on that side? Personally I think I'd try to raise the side nearest the fence by a hair...

    Sedgwick CP planer query

Low outfeed table and technique can both result in snipe. What is happening is that there is a gap, often imperceivable, between the board and the outfeed table as the board leaves the infeed table it drops this fraction resulting in snipe. I like to set up my outfeed table so that the knives...

    Climate change policy

The 'scientific community' demand nothing, science is not a god, nor does it say what is morally nor ethically right or wrong. Scientific study aims to understand how things work and use that information to predict or inform what may happen. There are confidence ranges, processes, peer reviews...

    Another lighting question

I installed these panels in my workshop 2 years ago and they have been great. There is a little wiring required to the driver and on to the fixture but it's very simple. I think a panel would have less shadows than a batten in the layout you show...

    Sawstop demo and thoughts

Our brothers and sisters across the pond seem much more gung ho regards guarding on saws. I have a number of US based team members and salaries and disposable income are higher in US than UK for the same roll, so priced in dollars against higher base salaries the saw is likely more affordable...

How to make cabinets like this?

The wall cabinets do have a double thick side, each cabinet is however double width so you have less of these. The wall cabinets are i think the same, you can see the double thickness on the right hand side between the last cabinet and the tall unit. Other pictures on the website you can see...

    Makita Plunge Base

It's a nicely weighted base but the dust extraction is awful, I improved it somewhat by duct taping the open hole across the back of the plastic shroud and then plunging the cutter through the tape to create an opening.

Putty and paint advice for sash windows

I painted some trad putty almost immediately in the summer and it was too early so the paint cracked and flaked off, however a few months later a light sand and touchup on the putty and it all was good. Offer fair warning to the client that you can install sooner with the risk of some future...

If you have a pension you likely do own a part of an oil and gas company, unless you have taken specific action on what your pension is invested into.

    Wood id quiz

They are all amazing looking timber, I wouldn’t have known you could get laurel in such large sections and I’ve never heard of pepper wood. Where do you source such exotic and figured timber?

    2x4s for outdoor furniture?

Treat all cut surfaces, design to minimize ground contact, design for draining and avoid areas/joints that will collect water, don't position it in a damp shadowed corner. A bloke on YT did some experiments with PT timber and after 5yrs of some pretty abusive external conditions it was still ok...
