    Quality Froe

I think a hatchet such as one of those would be far more convenient to use to cut kindling than a Froe, which to my mind looks ill suited for cutting kindling, but at 92€ (for 'second grade'!) those Swedish ones look rather expensive for such a basic task, which calls for no finesse. Castrorama...

    Vases and water

In my earlier post, for the sake of simplicity I omitted to say that if a hollow form is to be turned in two parts and joined horizontally, it makes sense that the joint is spigotted so that the two pieces marry up accurately and that the joint is strengthened. Updated sketch below. It's a...

    Vases and water

Some turners struggle to turn hollow forms, and one suggestion of the late Mark Baker (ex editor of Woodturning Magazine, is to turn the hollow form in two parts (not in the centre as I've shown in my simple sketch below, which violates the 'golden mean'), is to hollow out two parts from one...

Perhaps a slightly controversial turning question...

These cubes were designed by the late Dave Springett, and featured in a five page article in Issue 127 of Woodturning Magazine some years ago. Most of Dave's designs were far more complex, and featured in a book entitled 'Woodturning Wizardry'. I've attached a picture of the two tools - one a...

    Value of kit?

From my experience as secretary of an active woodturning club for 18 years, I'd say those prices are pretty much spot on. We've found that where items are in current production, half the current price is about right, so to take a few of your items as examples: The AXI SK114 body (no jaws) is...

Perhaps a slightly controversial turning question...

Quote: @ M Chavez: While the market should be able to take up to £1k price per set without too much resistance, I don't see any way to turn these for a reasonable profit - once you take into account tool sharpening, prototyping, turning, polishing, ditching the extra pawns & pieces that are...

    Joke Thread II

Could the 'gender fluid' Eddie Izzard be the next 'female' Labour Prime Minister? (Admittedly he'd need a handbag and necklace.).

Trying to help my retired joiner dad

It would be a monumental task to try to list and sell what is basically industrial equipment yourself. My best advice would be to seek the advice of an auction house which has internet listing as well as ‘in the room’. They have experience in disposing of equipment when factories close down...

    Joke Thread II

A woman went to the emergency room, where she was seen by a young new doctor. After about three minutes in the examination room, the doctor told her she was pregnant. She burst out of the room and ran down the corridor screaming. An older doctor stopped her and asked what the problem was. After...

Perhaps a slightly controversial turning question...

I sometimes turn things that are useful, sometimes both decorative and useful, and sometimes, things which you might term 'nick knacks' for no other reason that I can. An example of a 'nick knack' which has no purpose in life and is nothing more than a conversation piece, which evokes comments...
