What woodworking book to buy first?

Yes, I am going to buy both eventually, but I wanted to start somewhere, so I wanted to pick the book that will be more useful in the beginning. Thank you very much for your opinion.

What woodworking book to buy first?

I will be working with hand tools only, so I would like to ask if Wearing's book contains useful information for hand tool woodworkers or does he mostly describe work with machines? I am going to buy the Wearing's book from Schwarz' website, so money will go to the same pocket anyway :). I want...

What woodworking book to buy first?

Hello, I would like to buy myself a woodworking book to read during the winter time and I am deciding between The Anarchist's Toolchest by Chris Schwarz and The Essential Woodworker by Robert Wearing. Which one should I buy first? I am asking, because I do not know if Robert Wearing has also...

Workbench top from square lumber (100x100 mm)

My bench will be 1500x600 mm. I can buy the rough sawn beechwood for 100 mm thick top for around 30 € in the local lumberyard. But this is a temporary solution only. I will build a bigger bench in a few years, once I build a small workshop for myself.

What is an acceptable gap when using a hand plane?

Thank you very much for this jig, I will give it a try when having slight irregularities on my edge :)

Best type of saw for ripping long boards

Thank you very much for your answer. I have thought that the Japanese saw is too short so I would need more strokes with the same TPI, so a big rip saw would be better. I also have a circular saw as the last resort, but I do not like the mess it creates and all the noise. For my personal...

Best type of saw for ripping long boards

Hello, I would like to ask you if it is feasible to rip 2m long oak boards (32 or 50 mm thick) with 300 mm Ryoba Japanese saw? This is the kind of material I will be commonly working with and I would like to predominantly use Japanese saws. 2 m is the maximum length I may work with. Usually...

Workbench top from square lumber (100x100 mm)

hand tools only. I would like to create a DIY front vise (Moxon type) that will have its top flush with the benchtop.

Workbench top from square lumber (100x100 mm)

The benchtop will be only 1,5 m long due to space constraints, and I wanted to make it heavy enough not to move around when I plane. My original plan was to have 4" apron and 2" top above it as you mentioned. That is 150 mm together. I have a lot of 300 mm clamps, so there will be 150 mm left...

Workbench top from square lumber (100x100 mm)

Hello, I would like to build my first small workbench with a laminated top. I always see people use 2x4 for the benchtops. Can I also use 4x4 (approximately 100x100 mm), or there is some rule that it is better to glue a higher number of narrow and tall boards, instead of a smaller number of...

What is an acceptable gap when using a hand plane?

There is this Lie Nielsen Workbench It has a very similar type of construction than my sawhorse workbench. What makes it laterally stronger than mine? Is it the thicker top or joints or thicker legs or hardwood material? Lie Nielsen workbench has thicker top, but the underlying construction is...

What is an acceptable gap when using a hand plane?

Thank you very much for your answer. I did not want to use brackets, because they would interfere with the area, where I could use clamps. Anyway, I will not work during the winter in the garden, and I will build the workbench as the first thing in the spring.

What is an acceptable gap when using a hand plane?

Thank you very much. I will try to grind the underside of the cap iron (I have the classic Stanley type) on an edge of a water stone to get only the center down. I needed to move out of the garden shed out to the garden, as we do not have enough space and store many things in the shed, so I...

What is an acceptable gap when using a hand plane?

Hello D_W, Thank you very much for your answer. I am currently using cap iron on every plane that I have except the wooden scrub plane, where I think it is not necessary (and it was not provided by the manufacturer of the plane, too). I make sure that it is very close to the edge of the blade...

Hello David, Thank you very much for your answer. Your DVDs are on my wish list for some time already so I will definitely buy them and learn from them.

What is an acceptable gap when using a hand plane?

I have seen all relevant videos by David Charlesworth on his youtube channel and once I will have bought at least the basic toolkit, I will invest into his paid DVDs, too. Also, I want to buy some classic woodworking books, too. I have ditched my old small table, that was made of very thin...

What is an acceptable gap when using a hand plane?

I know about that trick, I must just try it when the total thickness of both boards is more than the width of the blade. But I should get good results as well.
