We have a 'Men's Shed' in my local town (Nailsworth, Glos.). I'm sure contact with them would provide some advice / contacts / tips etc. http://www.practicalintelligence.org.uk/mens-shed.php BRgds Simon

    Tormek 2000 Wheel Change

Does anyone know if there is a similar solution available with the Jet wet wheel machine, the securing nut on mine is corroded on and no amount of WD40 will free it! Any thoughts?

    Axminster Button Jaws

As an alternative, I'd suggest going for these (with a set of carriers). http://www.axminster.co.uk/150mm-wood-jaw-plates That way you can make cole jaws from some 3/4 mdf and threaded inserts, but also have option to drill / glue / screw / nail etc to the face and throw away after time +...

    hollowing tools

Gaz, To follow my theme - it depends! What you want to make, wet / dry timber, cross or end grain. Most will tackle all, but some excel in one type, others in other types of work. If you only ever want to hollow miniature forms, that will rule some options out and the reverse is true. I...

    can some one help

Gaz, As ever - imho it depends! Roobo gives some good advice and source of further info. Below is my thinking on your question. If you have no other grinder at all I would suggest a dry wheel grinder with a jig. Dry Wheel Grinder Budget is the next consideration: Low - basic 6" grinder...

+1 for Kalimna idea - think about balance etc but probably the best 'diy' fix to your issue.

    robert sorby wood turning chisels

do sorby still hardness test every tool (tiny dent from test m/c just above handle ferrel)? I seem to remember they this used to be the case but doubt this level of detail would be on a fake. Simon

    Best shows ?

Yandles spring or autumn show quite good but v.busy and demos are a bit ad-hoc, folks gathered round a stand type thing. APTC I think have a turning weekend at their nuneaton store - a new effort as free / non-ticket so may be a bun-fight. There used to be a good show at ally pally this time...

Building your own lathe my FAIL thread

Pic nine, (where you complain about chatter / vibration) does show a lot of material out of the chuck on a slender job so unless tailstock support removed for photo, any lathe will stuggle as the work will be the defining item in this set-up. Other than that, good try though!! Simon

    Oval jig

I think vicmarc did a oval jig some years ago- expensive iirc (£1500+). A lot of engineering in it (toothed belt driven cams and linear slides) so doubt they made much on each sold given limited volume. Interesting and perhaps something someone like AWGB etc could buy / rent etc but other than...

    Newbie bench grinder question

I had similar issues with a record grinder. Record sent a total of 4 new white stones before one was acceptable. Ended up giving up and buying a more expensive crusen unit that is a dream. EDIT: No relation to seller but just seen this in FOR SALE section...

Thought I'd say Hi and ask some advice.

Outboard turning. OK - my advice here, (may seem a bit negative / grumpy but not meant to be so, just honest). If I were you, I'd earn my wings with turning inboard (normal side) first. This is for three reasons: 1) Safety (yours) - as a beginner I would guess you can get something like 4"+...

    Turning greenwood bowls
