Point taken Alf, although I did think that the thinner body might be some well known pointer to a particular era etc. I will post up some photos.... Cheers, Mark

Another E-bay rescue.... vintage No6 , some info please

sorry, what my post was about was the plane - I meant is the plane " a good one" and just different or is it a run of the mill nothing special, not what what my consumer rights are. As it was only £25 I am not that fussed if it was in worse condition, as i like tinkering wirth them and I can...

Another E-bay rescue.... vintage No6 , some info please

I just picked up this plane, despite being described as "one of the nicest number 6's " he had seen, I am somewhat dissapointed. The main issue is the body, not ony does it have some fairly deep pitting where it looks as if it was lain on something wet, the body itself is noticeably thinner...

    Advice on pillar drill purchase.

I have found a couple of second hand Nutool CH10 near enough for collection to me, but wondered if they would be powerfull enough? I would want it to be able to handle a 35mm forstner bit in hardwood comfortably, what do you think? Cheers, mark

    Advice on pillar drill purchase.

Hi, I want to get one of these, had a look on axminster, but the cheaper ones had variable reviews and they only do 2 makes. Can anyone advise on a good quality good value drill? I guess the budget would be approx £200, I dont need gadgets on it, just a good table, powerful motor and reliable...

Roubo bench project - WIP (UPDATE No 3 )

That looks really nice, I love the leg vice. Was tossing up wether to do one on mine, but was unsure wether I would use it much. That means that your frame will be flush with the bench front I guess? I thought about this and decided it would not look right so shelved the idea. Would be...

new project - Ebay sweetheart 5and a half

I just found the blood and **** site, which makes really interesting reading. Mine has the original keyhole shaped lever cap, which is nice. So far, all I have done is strip off the nasty paint applied over the body by the sellers, but the original paint is not good either and there are patches...

new project - Ebay sweetheart 5and a half

so, the plot thickens!! The body actually has 3 patent dates, march 25-02, Aug 19-02 and Apr 19-10. The frog is stamped 5 and a half. Does that help further narrow it down? i would really like to correctly identify this and also, if what you say about the iron is correct, then i will have no...

    My workbench Project

The next big hurdle is the mortices for the legs and frame. I have got 4 x 4 iroko for the legs, so it will be a bit of a mission to machine these, as i have no morticing machine. Does anyone have any tips on the best way to do these? i was thinking of machining as much material away as possible...

    My workbench Project

Hi, I would like to share with you some pictures of my first major project, a workbench, so I can work on learning furniture making. I have based the design on the David Charlesworth style, with removeable tool tray, although mine is made of Corian, leftover from a job. ( I run a construction...

new project - Ebay sweetheart 5and a half

The iron is blunt as you like and rounded off, I think it needs a regrind. As its the original iron, I would like to keep it rather than replace with a Hock as I did on the last plane I restored. I think a new screw kit would be good, as most\ are rusty and butchered. What kit would I need? And...

Restoring an old Norris No 5

here are some pictures of the finished article. The stain has not taken a deeply as I would have liked on the sides, but the finish is nice , I used Renwax over the stain. I think she looks and feels pretty good. Cheers, mark

new project - Ebay sweetheart 5and a half

OK,here she is as brought. Looks like some has just gone over it with a very rough grindwer wheel and sprayed the body black. There is quite a bit of rust on the frog body that will be difficult to remove. I am thinking of getting the sole and frog beadblasted, what do you think...

new project - Ebay sweetheart 5and a half

I just got the above plane on ebay, sadly it seems to have had a quick makeover to make it look ok for the ebay photos. On close inspection, the body needs striping and the sole grinding flat and polishing, same with most of the rest, its basically sound but needs doing properly. I would like to...

Advice please on vice for bench project

Hi, I am currently making a work bench, which is going pretty well. I have a front vice at one side, and an end vice. For the end vice, I have used a veritas tail vice thread, as when i set out on the project, i thought that I would make a wagon type vice. However, I have since changed my mind...

    Which Chisels?

Are people really seriously suggesting that the Ln chisels are no good? This seems to be a very interesting subject, as for everyone who says that the more expensive ( LN, japanese) stuff is great, plenty of others with ( from what i can gather) lots of experience and knowledge say they dont...
