    Woden - who they?

To the best of my knowledge, you're both correct. Woden made good planes. However after Woden became part of Record, Record had no room for two premium brands of planes, and used the name Woden on their cheaper range (think Stanley Handyman). Cheers, Vann.

    Imperial drill bits

You've got me worried now. I'll have to go down to Mega and check, but last time I looked (2-3 years ago) they still sold both metric and imperial (I haven't had to buy any recently as they had a good supply at work). Nuts. I wanted some 1/4" round bar (to thread 1/4" BSW) two weeks ago and...

    Imperial drill bits

That's all very well, but every 'big shed' here has imperial sizes, however you have to find a specialist supplier (often at specialist prices) for drills in 0.1mm increments. Cheers, Vann.

    Imperial drill bits

Interesting question. Imperial sized drill bits are still readily available over here (New Zealand), and I'd have thought you guys use imperial measurements more than we do these days. Cheers, Vann.

    Record Ridgeway Quality

I was thinking more of the machining, such as the interface between the frog and the main casting. I've seen them with the frog embedded in the blue paint. Of course almost any plane can be made to work if you have the time and know what you're doing. Cheers, Vann.

Interesting flight over the Black Sea

Hopefully it's spotting some nice grey targets bobbing about below... Cheers, Vann.

    Record Ridgeway Quality

I'd not jump at a Record from the Ridgeway era. By the time Record and Ridgeway merged, quality was well into decline. That's not to say it will definitely be carp, just that the chances of get a carp one are much higher. Cheers, Vann.

    Thread tapping.

As that statement sounds outrageous - I finally found it. Just left of the "Guarantee" - "Lubricating Oil is useless" (I nearly got it right ;) Cheers, Vann.

    Crown guard

I have the crown guard mounted on very sturdy offset arms on my Waddie. I see what Jacob is saying but I haven't hit the blade yet. With regard to a riving knife mounted guard, what you need the ask yourself is: are you the sort of person who will meticulously reattach the guard each time after...

    Wadkin lathe restoration

Clogs, can you give me the RS number again (or the test no.) please. Some of the dating info we had for that period has been revised, thanks to new information. Cheers, Vann.

    Thread tapping.

Be careful cutting the threads - don't force the tap too much. They snap off in the hole and then you might as well throw the mild steel piece away and start again. A cheap tap will most likely be less forgiving than a quality tap. Some old tapping sets say "cutting oil is useless" and recommend...

Braze or solder broken cast iron plane sides?

    1. Applying a lot of heat to thin cast iron risks distortion - but can work, albeit sometimes requiring some surface grinding to true things up. 2. I doubt soldering would work for more than 5 minutes. 3. Silver soldering may work, but will have a colour difference. 4 Brazing (using brass...

    Whats with these "similar threads"

I've not noticed them before (on this forum - too many adverts in between), but now that I've looked I see the joke thread is considered to be a similar thread. I think you've just been insulted by an algorithm. Cheers, Vann.

    Joke Thread II

A young man stops in a small town for the night. At the pub are a bunch of locals who have obviously been meeting there for many a year. The young man sits down at the bar and orders a drink. Every now and then one of the locals calls out a number. This is followed by chuckles, laughs and short...

    Einhell tools

I hope it was sold because the alternative is probably "nicked" (half-inched). But I'm sure you mean "solid". ;) While on my OE in 1981 I bought a 220v 115mm Einhell disc grinder in a Dutch supermarket. I couldn't believe you could buy tools in a supermarket, and the price was half what I...

    What size nut?

Although it doesn't say so on the part of the spanner we can see, I assume your spanner is 9/16" AF (Across Flats). What you want is a BSW/BSF spanner - 1/4"W-5/16"BSF to be specific - which should measure 13.34mm AF (though most of mine are worn and some are getting up nearer 14mm). Note that...
