Am I ffing mad ? Very long post 😄

Is that the River Merse/Maas running passed your backyard? If you throw a bottle in that it will eventually drift passed the backyard of the house my mother was born in, in Limburg, Netherlands. Good luck with your project. It looks both fun and frustrating... Cheers, Vann.

Aluminium Tote / Knob nuts? (nothing rude)

I bought my UK made Stanley No.4, brand new, in 1973. It has the features you list: aluminium handle nuts; cadmium plated adjuster wheel. Also two-piece sheetmetal yoke/fork. I believe these features came in very late 1960s or early 1970s, and had gone again by mid/late 1970s. Being in New...

    Grrrrr...Milwaukee, what a con.

You may not need to wait for Taiwan. If China is caught supplying weapons to Russia there may be sanctions. That could be as soon as next week. Cheers, Vann.

Old Stanley’s or new Quangsheng planes? Which do I need?

I think it's daft to spend much on a jack plane. It's for roughing work - you don't need a precision plane. Definitely buy Stanley/Record. I would also suggest you do the same for the No.4 and No.7 - though if you really want to have a new plane make it the No.4 smoother. Another good reason...

Wadkin 30inch vs robinson 24 inch

We had one at the railway workshops where I did my apprenticeship. I only ever ran timber through it - they had other people employed to do the maintenance. I believe they are good machines, but whether they are better than your Robinson - who knows. It's much of a muchness, and probably...

    Wadkin lathe ID

Parts are, of course, like hens teeth for a machine that old (and mine is the newest of my six Wadkins). Be prepared to pay an arm and a leg for what you can pick up on eBay. IIRC I paid $250 NZD for mine ( ~£125). Wallace put up a restoration he did on an RTA Wadkin RT Lathe restoration but...

    Wadkin lathe ID

I bought mine from a school about 300 miles away. I borrowed a van and dismantled the lathe outside the classroom, then lifted or rolled (on pipes) everything into the van by myself. Lifting the headstock off and back on was the heaviest (and hardest) - the bed was done using levers and blocks...

    Wadkin lathe ID

No manual (I'm not sure if they produced one). It has a 6" swing. I think maximum length between centres is 36". Both head and tailstocks have 2MT tapers. The headstock also has 1 3/8" BSW thread. Speeds are 1500 and 3000 rpm. About the only feature I can think of is the speed selector handle...

    Wadkin lathe ID

The Test No. indicates it was made in 1951. Here are a couple of leaflets. Cheers, Vann.

    Wadkin lathe ID

Yes it's a Wadkin RT woodlathe - made 12 machines after my own Wadkin RTA 380. Cheers, Vann.

Here's my contribution to sexual equality. What's a "mith" anyway ('cause apparently some women have them). Cheers, Vann.

Lie Nielsen or Clifton 5 1/2?

Maybe where you are, but over here Norris's are like hen's teeth. Cheers, Vann.

Lie Nielsen or Clifton 5 1/2?

I have the Cliffie No.3. I love it. It's one my "go to' planes - I keep it set up for very fine finishing. My other "go to" planes are beaten up Records. How long ago? I understand they had QC problems in the early years, but I've not heard of problems since. I bought both my Cliftons...

Down here in New Zealand we have a long established ice cream maker branded "Tip Top". In the 60s they released a sub-brand called "Gaytime Ice Cream" and the jingle went "we're all having a gay time". That brand was suddenly dropped in the early 70s. I wonder why? Queers.. I mean: Cheers, Vann.

Lie Nielsen or Clifton 5 1/2?

But made in a country with too many balloons. But I have heard than their W1 irons are great, too. Cheers, Vann.

Lie Nielsen or Clifton 5 1/2?

It's six of one, and half a dozen of the other. Both are damned good planes. I like the looks of the Lie-Nielsen better, but not the A2 blade - probably for that reason I would select the Clifton. Don't worry about the grey cast-iron - there's a short video somewhere of a Clifton No.7 being...

That's neat! I'd buy one of those. When I met the woman who is now my wife (~1995) I had a dial phone. Her first hubby was a telephone technician and so had always had the most modern phones. Her twelve-year-old son went to use my phone one day, but had to come and ask how to work it. He'd...

What is the correct chisel to use for opening metal paint tins?

What ⁉️ Two pages and no one has the correct answer (IMHO). When I started my apprenticeship I was shown the correct way to open a paint can. You use the flat side of a putty knife (when we were in the paint shop we always had to have a putty knife in our overalls pocket) to lever off the lid...
