    Elliott Progress 16 Restoration

While I'm not familiar with this exact fitting, it appears to be a form of spring washer. I would try two screwdrivers or similar, one each side, to prise the tabs out of the groove (I think you'll need three hands). I suspect the washers will be easily damaged, so go easy - maybe even file up...

    Tools for children

Children need smaller tools. For a nice plane, buy him a Stanley No.1... :ho2 Cheers, Vann.

    What we take for granted

I also thought "Christmas". My younger daughter (now 15) has always had some interest in making things and picks up things I teach her in my workshop, quickly. I, on the other hand, when it comes to smartphones and computers, am the i-d-i-o-t. And worst of all, I'm old enough to be forgetful...

    Yandles - poor experience

Following this thread from a distance (New Zealand), I can't help thinking the same. It would also be useful to find out where the problem with the emails lays. It sounds to me like it might be at Yandles end - that would explain why others have also had problems, while those that deal with...

    Plane handling

You're like guys who steal the cutlery off an aircraft. When you get off an aircraft, or a starship, leave the flaming dishes behind (hammer). I bet Kirk is still looking for that mug. Cheers, Vann  .

Found an old Stanley plane in my dad’s loft

This was near the end in English manufacture of Record planes, and quality control was poor. That's not to say it isn't a good plane - rather that the chances of it being carp are much higher. Like others have said, try it out before making any decisions on it's future. The Stanley Handiman...

Remove lacquer from plastic plane handle

Gas axe? That would help get rid of the nasty plastic too - so you can replace it with a nice wooden handle (hammer) . I'll get my coat... Happy New Year folks. Cheers, Vann.

    Surface Planer / Jointer

Usually as a result of cost cutting. Possibly also as cast iron might be seen as old fashion. Even Wadkin changing many fittings on their products to aluminium from 1949-50 - things such as handwheels, blade guards (but fortunately not the really important things like tables and fences)...

    Surface Planer / Jointer

More likely to have switched from cast iron to cast aluminium, than from cast aluminium to cast iron... I have no personal knowledge or experience of the Whitehead machines. As for Wadkins, before the RZ there was the RD (which, like the RZ, also came in 12" & 16" widths), a very good machine...

    Wadkin LP restoration

Horn handles  :?:  I got shafted. Mine (an earlier model dating to 1925) has either steel handles... ...or no handles. Good to see you get started on that. And envious that you'll, no doubt, finish yours before I finish mine. Cheers, Vann.

    useless information

Tea bags ain't "proper" (hammer) . Proper tea is made with loose tea in a pot. You put the milk in the cup first, otherwise some of those pesky tea leaves will float  . Cheers, Vann. ps. I was taught to make "proper" tea by my much older BIL - an Englishman from Staines. He later...

    Second hand planes....

New planes are NOT good out of the box. New planes are no more than a kit of parts that need checking out and fettling. This applies to new Stanley, Record, and any number of lesser brands. If you want a new plane that IS ready to go, out of the box, you'll need to stump up the cost of a...

    Norwegian wood(shop) build

In New Zealand we would have used British Standards until maybe 40 years ago. I don't know how different we are now. We don't use individual wires, but three wires (phase, neutral & earth) for single phase, inside a tough plastic screen ("TPS"). For sockets we use 2.5mm twin & earth TPS cable...

You'll be pleased, you're nearly finished. You can start moving your hand tools and machines into their new home soon. I'm envious. Cheers, Vann.

    No more 2 3/8" blades

Well the first two should keep you quiet. The musical making sounds a little noisier... With regards to stocks of Stanley irons... I found that UK retailers are not good at stocking UK made products (why bother, when you can order direct from the maufacturer). Several years ago I wanted a...

    Record No 078

Off on a tangent, but: This view is often aired - but I don't believe it's the case. The Woden W78 is definitely a development of the WS Tools A78 - with beefed-up rods, etc. However the Record shares almost none of the detail of the A78/W78. Method of holding the rods is different. Spacing of...

Wood screws- type and where to buy?

I'm with you. Phillips and pozidrive are a pain. Over here (New Zealand) Robertson square drive are overtaking pozidrive as the most commonly available. I like to use brass slotted screws for better quality work (not that I do much of that) but they're hard to find as most brass screws now come...

    Stanley Yankee No. 41Y

Seems everyone else has gone off on a Yankee screwdriver tangent (130, 131 & 135). Yes I've got couple of 41Ys and also the Millers Falls equivalent (and managedto pick up some NOS bits for thr MF). I did intend to use them but haven't so far. I still recall getting told off as a kid for...
