Anyone tried Abodo heat treated wood ?

These developments always make me realise how amazing wood actually is. It's strong and light and can last many years given correct treatment. People are always trying to make materials do things there not entirely suited to. I'm guessing the heat treatment kills all the embedded mould and...

Question about router cutters for AQ21

Firstly maybe I'm wrong here but you sound like a "have a go hero" who's had a London quote for this job and thinks how hard can it be. Just be aware of your limitations here. Secondly I normally put a block on the router base and work on a flat bench to stop tipping here. Thirdly as mentioned...

    Any Festool owners?

I'm no fan boy but.... the 120 bridges the gap between heavy workshop radial arm saws and chop saws. Its a bit more accurate than others but that bit makes all the difference. Shake the head on the 120 then shake it on every other saw. The saw has stunning accuracy and settability. Even the...

Sharpening north west gouges & Chisels

A chisel/ gouge is constantly getting blunter than when it come of the strop. Work wood or sharpen? To get the finish without sanding means freshly sharp tools buffing can make that edge far to rounded and steep so a bit of grinding even but mostly on the oilstone. The rubber wheels are actually...

Sharpening north west gouges & Chisels

Ps I'm the same with carving tools I tend to do each one as I need it. Even during a carving only the last strokes need to use razor tools. Some degree of blunt is fine for 95%. Which suggests sharpening is a constant companion. I also find Ashley illes tools to be poor and thick. The thinner...

Sharpening north west gouges & Chisels

Ashley illes and many other makers use grinders then rubber wheels then buffing mops. They can be OK but are often not just so. I find it more satisfactory to sharpen by grinder then by hand using oilstones. Slow but right. The closer you can get the shape from the grinder the quicker the job...

    Unflush joints with festool xl

All these techniques and tips suggest issues can and do occur fairly often. They occur with biscuits and they only plunge a bit. My little domino is about the best. It's just because the fences are a bit clunky and sometimes don't stay parallel to the blade once again the issues are doubled...

    Unflush joints with festool xl

Maybe me but that's what they do. At least that's what mine does. I've figured if it's putting that domino in slightly skew even I whisker on a deep plunge and it's off thats double off. Its only hand held the tolerances aren't super tight.

    Moulding Profiles

There was a book solely about turned mouldings. Can't remember the name unfortuneatly. I wouldn't get to obsessed about classical shapes they were usually not at all strict post Georgian. They can even look predictable tbh. But also there's some original 1930s sash windows in leek where they've...

Sharpening north west gouges & Chisels

I'd want £10-20 a gouge to get them ready for carving. It something that you need to do anyway. Factory style sharpening is rarely right simply sharp.

    sash pocket chisel

I don't think the sources are particularly faulty I quite like the approach of windowmaking. It's just having a few other sources can help clarify. For example the tapered cross housing used to join pulley stile to cill would be almost impossible to make using the explanation/diagram in...

    sash pocket chisel

I've actually got a demo sash case i made with 1275gt a few years back with the pockets made and cut. I'll take a few photos and post them up. I didn't use the sash pocket chisel I used a small (150mm)Japanese woodpecker saw.

For instance compare the stanley to the olfa. I find the stanley to be a beautiful design I especially love the huge thumbturn.

    unusual stanley blade

I seemingly finished buying tools quite a few years ago. (Unfortuneatly my tool buying from previous years has given me enough for several lifetimes!) I always think I have a decent eye for tools even if like this one there a bit esoteric.
