    Myford lathe ML8

I used to have a ML8. It was ok.... Good for spindle work and small bowl turning, not good for larger bowl turning. Cast iron is better if you can afford it. The Myford accessories such as bandsaw, table saw etc are not worth having. The only one I ever used was the morticing attachment.

How do you turn off your compressor

Years ago, when I got my first compressor, someone told me that you should never switch off a compressor with the mains switch, always with the switch on the machine. I have always done this, but never known why or whether it's really necessary. Any answers?

    Curved kitchen doors

I would recommend using flexi ply, not kerfed MDF. It doesn't crack up the way the MDF does, and costs about the same. I'd also suggest you use styromoulds from Bagpress- they are made by CNC from rigid foam and are well worth it for a job like this. I have made several kitchens like your design...

    Sizing curved panels

Thanks for your advice- it seems that a pencil and a bit of hand planing may be the simplest! Cheers!

    Sizing curved panels

I make a lot of curved panels in a bag press. The trickiest thing is getting them square after gluing up. You can't just cut them square as you would with a flat board, as they also have to be true to the curve. What I usually do is put the panels back on the former, pencil along the edge of...

    Lathe Upgrade Brand Advice

Graduate drawbacks: Lots of people seem to think they are too low. It doesn't bother me, but I'm not a giant! Ummm.. can't think of anything else! I had a ML8 before the Graduate, and would never go back. The toolrest arm for bowl turning is aluminium and very bouncy. I haven't converted the...

    Lathe Upgrade Brand Advice

I got a secondhand Union Graduate on eBay 3 years ago for £350, which was lucky. However, they often go for less than £500, and I can recommend them.

    Help needed - sticky situation

If the timber is oak, and you used water for the clean-up, the blue is more likely to be iron staining which can happen very easily with oak, just from little specks of iron floating around in the air or on a not very clean rag. If it is, the marks should come out with oxalic acid, which is sold...

What type of wood is this? Sorry!

It looks like laburnum to me too. If you look at the end grain, walnut has very tiny pores, while laburnum's are much larger.

Wadkin 10 AGS dimension saw versus Kity 619

I have had a Wadkin AGS/P for about 25 years and I don't think I've had to spend a single penny on repairs or maintenance. Mine had a few accuracy issues when I got it- I had to do some adjusting - but it is now very accurate. There are a few annoying aspects to the design, such as a gap in the...

    Glueing magnets

I use the biscuit jointer to make a slot in the edge of the door, and then slip the magnet in and cover with a glued-in shaped piece of matching timber which can then be planed flush. Magic catches!

    Making Crittall doors in wood

Thanks for all your responses. It's for an old friend so I'll persevere. I'll give them a scale drawing plus sample sections. The glass will triangulate the doors I guess, so they shouldn't sag(?) the main problem I foresee is them being quite flexible. Thanks for the suggestion re ash- that...

    Making Crittall doors in wood

I've been asked to make something like the attached in wood. What is the narrowest section I could use for the stiles and rails? The client is open to having the sections thicker than normal to make up, but that doesn't help much with stability. And what would be the best timber? They are going...
