    Dam% Damp

When plasterboard gets wet it losses most of its strength and may sag and crack in the future, also as it's above a garage it should be fire rated and may no longer perform as hoped. A further problem will be staining of the ceiling, you'll need a stain blocking paint before redecorating. I...

    Help pricing work.

There's two ways of pricing work, add up costs and your time or just how much you think the client will pay. You can work faster and more efficiently to increase your hourly rate. I wouldn't pay £800 for two shelves but then I wouldn't want 8 coats of lacquer on them either.

    Ground Beams — Shambles

If they really can't get ready mix in then make sure they use a bucket gauge with the mixer. You need lots of buckets, fill one with cement and six with aggregate then load the mixer with them and keep repeating. If they try and just count shovel fulls you always end up with a weak mix with not...

    Wood ident please

I doesn't look like any kind of rosewood in those photos. I've no idea what it is though but it doesn't look a premium timber and mostly appears to be sapwood.

Advice -Hanging and treating a Sapele Hardwood Gate?

It looks a bit like a cut down door. If you use a hook and band or t strap hinge they should fix to the ledges not just through the boarding. I think three 4" door hinges would be ok, use stainless or brass ones fix two at the top 4-6" apart and one at the bottom. I agree with Phil about the end...

Tormek T4 or is it overkill for my needs?

Now the fun will start. Motorized systems like a Tormek are used for regrinding tools to shape them. I have one and use it once a year at most. For general sharpening a stone is used. I'd get a good fine diamond stone, budget £50.

    Adult tricycles

My mother got a tricycle when she started having balance problems but never got on with it. The issue is that if you're used to a bicycle you lean to turn whereas a tricycle turns flat ,if you lean it goes onto two wheels and tends to tip particularly on a camber. We all cycle quite a lot but...

    Building grade timber quality

Machine grading is done by machine. The plank is passed through rollers which apply bending force and measure deflection. It's then passed as c16 or c24 or fail. it's a purely engineering strength grade not a beauty contest.

    Building grade timber quality

It's got a lot better in the last 30 years. Sawing used to be inconsistent with 1/4 inch variation and taper common, also drying was much more hit and miss. Modern supplies are sawn much better, are regualised to consistent dimensions and computer controlled kilning gives much better results...

    Building grade timber quality

Those look fine for construction timber, infact you don't seem to have got any really bad ones. Small sections will twist and bend during kilning, on the plus side you can work the twist and bends out a bit during building.

    Proposed workshop build

If you have not got neighbors or a highway on the boundary then I think the poster is correct about the 30m3 footprint for regs and 4 m to ridge. I have certainly built garages and sheds for people on that basis. The fire regs aren't easy to interpret and height is a factor, you can certainly...

    Proposed workshop build

A142 is a light mesh and fibres or more cement in the mix may be just as good, ask the concrete supplier to confirm what's best for you, also consider a retarder if it's a hot day. Wether the slab subsequently cracks will depend on site conditions and ground preparation so I wouldn't worry about...

Wall plate... If this is the wall plate, it's not all on the wall! Problems?

That does look like the wall plate which joins the roof to the wall and should be tied down to prevent movement. If the wall is out it's normal to square the wall plate so you can pattern cut the rafters but it should be mostly on the wall. Having said all that if it's been like that for a long...

Contrasting timber for brown oak sideboard?

If the oak is particularly well figured I would use that for door and drawer fronts where it will be seen best and use something else for the top which is less visible, (especially in our house where every flat surface soon becomes covered in clutter). I agree that a UK hardwood would be best...

    Proposed workshop build

Regarding a slab foundation ask near a tree ask someone who might be able to give a definitive answer which may well save you overspecifying and wasting money or worrying you've done it wrong. Though you may not need building regs they may help or even recommend a local architect or technician...

New Concrete Floor levelling and finishing

Use a self leveling compound suitable for use as a finish surface, not all the types are. If you want a good finish get a builder, flooring guy or plasterer to do it , your first diy attempt won't be great.

Building a workshop in an old stone built barn

For between roof joists to there are special mineral wool rolls which spring in and won't fall back out immediately , itching isn't really a problem with the decent modern stuff. Rockwool rafterline is one I've used several times and it can also be used vertically, getting hold of less than a...

New Concrete Floor levelling and finishing

Are you talking surface roughness or not flat over a distance? Also what if any covering is going on the floor? The basic choices are build up, grind down or decide it doesn't matter.

Is a satin finish REALLY preferred over gloss?

An old guy I know used to work building stands for posh car companies at the big motor shows . We can sand and finish a piece of timber so well it looks just like a plastic laminate he used to say. I think that's basically why high gloss is out of fashion, though I do like it occasionally.

Building a workshop in an old stone built barn

The floor/ceiling values are different as heat rises. Insulation will only keep heat in if you actually add heat ,if you are reluctant to pay for that then a bit of insulation won't make much difference to the temperature inside. Regarding insulating the floor expanded polystyrene will be...
