    Electric vehicles

I saw an interesting thought/question posed in a science magazine in relation to self driving cars. If the majority of cars become automated and don't have drivers behind the wheels, how long will it be before pedestrians learn that the autonomous vehicles will stop if they just step out into...

Making a workbench that needs to be light

It comes down to what you are likely to be doing with your bench. I built one very similar to the video and the apron I find is fantastic. I built a leg vice and it means I can clamp things like a door on the side and plane the long edge, or just the edge of a long board etc Not sure if he's...

eBay scrapping selling fees for private sellers

I guess at the end of the day though, if you are trying to sell something then getting some messages asking if it is still available shouldn't be the most annoying thing. Fair enough if you've put a message on there along the lines of 'if you can see this ad then it is still available' but...

eBay scrapping selling fees for private sellers

That's fine but the problem I find with marketplace is that half the people don't bother to update the listing so it could be weeks old and then you ask to buy it and they either ignore you and you find the listing is removed without any notification or you get a 'sorry it's sold' message...

    floor to ceiling wardrobe

Not sure if this is a common problem so others may be able to add to it, but I have seen mould grow at the back of wardrobes as there is little air movement and can often be a cool damp place against an outside wall where water can condensate. My non-built in had the back come off slightly and...

    Slipping F-clamps

I normally find if it's slipping the way to get it to work is to push it up tight to the workpiece and then hold the bar and put my thumb on the sliding part and push, whilst with the other hand starting to screw the clamp. the pressure from my thumb is enough to get it to jam onto the bar and...

    Electric vehicles

Out of interest, after 155 pages of replies, has anyone actually changed their position on electric vehicles at all?

    Electric vehicles

Trailer? I wasn't necessarily suggesting reducing to 20mph, more a case that if people for a start drove within the speed limits and road conditions safety would siginificantly improve and then on top of that if you drive a large vehicle, drive a bit slower (5-10%) than smaller vehicles overall...

    Electric vehicles

https://theconversation.com/big-cars-might-make-you-feel-safer-but-heres-how-vehicle-size-impacts-others-in-a-crash-223343 some interesting points in the above. 'Children are eight times more likely to die when struck by an SUV compared to lighter and smaller cars.' 'For every fatal accident...

whilst I'm not sure EV is that answer (environmentally at least), you are missing the other challenge which is even bigger: Oil is finite! it will run out, and as it gets less and less easy to get hold of, it will get more and more expensive. Many countries won't want to export it if it is...

    Electric vehicles

I'd be more concerned about where I got grandchildren and a dog from.... You'd also struggle to get an entire football team into a BMW X5, but that is why there are different vehicles for different situations. In your example though, it would make a lot more sense for grandparents to have a...

    Electric vehicles

With my diesel I tend to only half fill the tank generally. As I do mostly short trips it doesn't make a lot of sense to me to carry 25-30kg of extra fuel with me everywhere i go, when half a tank will get me well over 250miles. I only brim the tank when I've got a very long journey to make...

    Electric vehicles

Not sure about mainland Europe but nothing to stop that design in the UK. I built a lotus 7 replica and it has open wheels, the same as a Caterham 7. Aerial Atoms and numerous other similar cars also have open wheel gaps. The Coefficient of drag on a Caterham is about 0.7 though! it's slightly...

but with ICE you have to have a higher bonnet (unless you have a boxer engine or mount it at the rear), so your frontal area cannot change shape as much as with an EV. I don't like teslas but the model 3 seems to have a much lower bonnet than ICE cars.

not sure I'd agree with that. Whilst they have improved the aerodynamics for the specific design, there are better similar size designs. I think they have mostly just stuck with designs from the 80's that sold well. This is an old-ish list but shows some interesting things...

    Electric vehicles

I'd mostly agree, but then I'd also say ICE cars are all pretty much the same and ugly. For example all of the VW Golfs of the last 25yrs pretty much look the same, and a lot of the VAG group cars like the Seat and Skoda look very similar also. From about 1997 I'd stuggle to tell the difference...

    Electric vehicles

This. All EV cars should be designed to be dead easy to swap out motors and batteries. It should be far easier than an ICE engine swap.

when I got a diesel I couldn't bare to waste a plastic glove each time for filling. Instead, I have a pair of cheap gloves like this https://www.toolstation.com/super-grip-gloves/p85720. I just keep them in the door pocket and roll them in on themselves after use. Had them for years now. No...

    US Election November 5th

Europe has collectively paid almost double in defence of Ukraine, than the US. Russia didn't need to start it. There was no reason to do so. NATO was not at any time going to invade Russia! Russia has more than enough resources and land without Ukraine. Russia could have been an economic...

    US Election November 5th

Your summation of the entire situation seems to forget some facts and completely ignores the small issue of the Ukrainian people. The reason Ukraine hasn't fallen to Russia is because most Ukrainians don't want to be Russians! They remember life under the Soviets and how millions were killed...
