Replace the seals of my double glazings

I replaced (still replacing on some windows) the seals on my aluminium windows. They fit in a T slot and are pretty tight to fit and I don't think it was going to be possible so I came up with a solution and made a small jig to hold a stanley knife blade to shave off just less than 1mm of the...

    Chair repair advice?

Another (although crude) option is to do your best at a tenon/dowels but then also add a steel bracket. The wider the better but depends on if you have access to any. I'm guessing sizes as i don't know the rail size but 50mm x 3mm running about 150mm along the rails and across the back would...

    Chair repair advice?

If I were you i'd avoid trying to plunge route into the end grain, it could be pretty dangerous for you and the workpiece, unless you were to make a pretty secure jig to hold it all. If it were me I'd cut the end flush on the cross piece and then make a simple L shaped jig to be able to drill...

Workshop reroof - advice on best polymer roofing felt please

Whilst it's not what you asked for I'd go with steel panel roofing. Easy to fit and also easy to change in the future. You can't take felt off and reuse. Also (I haven't done a full lifecycle analysis and I know galvanisation isn't great but) I reckon it is more environmentally friendly as it...

Wood burning stove for the workshop?

I've grown up with open fires and stoves in the house but weirdly I am somewhat nervous about putting a woodburner into a workshop. It feels a bit like tempting fate with all the sawdust, wood and chemicals kicking around. I would certainly put a smoke/heat alarm in, and consider some kind of...

    Improved hand tool myth.

I have a weird enjoyment at cutting hinges into my new door frames with chisel and a stanley knife. I've put new door linings throughout so had a lot to do. Although wasn't best pleased when I'd cut a lovely fitting hole for the hinge to find I'd done it on the wrong side of the lining! doh...

    Keeping the heat in

Agree but I'd use the recycled plastic loft insulation as it is non itchy etc easier to remove if you need to get to plumbing etc

Dining table - what finishes to use for a rustic look?

Depends on how you want it to look. If you oil it, it will darken off a lot. I personally like the very light look so would potentially look at a limewax. The legs could be wirebrushed to bring out the grain a bit so it holds more of the wax.

    Wood shelves in bathroom

Not sure it would be what you want to do but for my bath panel and the raised shower base I used the same flooring boards and ran them up in the same lines as the floor so it kind of looks like they have risen out of the floor. works really well for me as it all matches instead of some random...

Energy bills dated end of December 2022

I don't understand how others bills are so high. I pay £180/m (uncapped) which assuming I did my maths correctly has covered everything I've been using since the price increase in sept (I was on £114). Gas and elec. think its about 10p gas 33p elec (28p 49p standing charge) 3 bed detached 1955...

    Parkside lathe....

As above, I've watched a video or two on that lathe and it looked really awful. Might possibly be ok if you were just making really small things but personally I'd steer clear. I bought a lathe off FB for £100 which is infinitely better. Just keep an eye out and you'll find one eventually. If...

    Fraud?

It's FB, if you aren't physically picking it up then it is a scam! Seen so many new £89 E-bikes ?? why would you even try at this price point, it's obvious its a scam.

What ideas have you had for reducing Electricity consumption

You use the term 'wasted energy' but when you are heating your house this could be considered incorrect as all heat energy goes into the overall room heating (unless you are making toast in an unheated shed/room). I'm certainly not going to try and do the maths on the reduction in central...

    Lathe Tool Storage Rack

Sounds like a good plan to me. Just need a kettle for making the tea to dunk them in. :)

    Tail vice

If you want a really simple version have a look at a moxon vice. Easy to make. I've put a traditional leg vice on my workbench and it has been fantastic. Thinking of adding a moxon or end vice so I can clamp things flat on the bench with some bench dogs.

    repairing hinge rebate advice

Looks like an old building so might have lead paint. So if you are going to be sanding anything back etc wear a decent mask and try and collect as much dust as poss. The top layers of paint are probably ok it will just be when/if you get to the older ones.

General advice about choosing timber size for loft bed.

Personally I think you are over engineering the size of the timbers. I build my son a bed last year like this Junior Treehouse Bed - Rainbow Wood but higher. I used 2x2 inch timber for the legs and 20mm x 200mm (I think) for the rails. The rails are far deeper than I've seen on many production...

Anybody seen this in an offcut of Oak

I'm guessing it could possibly be a branch that has been subsumed into the tree as it has grown and just become part of the main trunk.

Anyone have a 3d printer? USB LED light mount idea

Got a Beanie with integral LED light for christmas and in my usual way I got to thinking how else the light unit, which is detachable, could be used. It's a really nice, bright usb rechargeable unit and I got to thinking perhaps it could be used in multiple different ways. If you could 3d print...

    Drive by water meter readings.

I would guess the same. My meter was replaced as it no longer transmitted, meter part still worked fine. assume the battery went.
