    Festool Vecturo

I researched slightly when buying a cordless fein multimaster The vecturo is equivalent of Fein's biggest model. Supercut ? Made for them or under license there's negligible difference with the Fein, so compare it to that, not to Festools prices. It's a big and powerful model. I think noise and...

First lathe: which spindle thread to choose?

M33 x 3.5mm on a new lathe. If you decide to buy an old classic lathe, many threads were used and chucks and adapters can be got for most of them. In that case you will be choosing the lathe because of it's build or features and the spindle thread will be incidental. Axminster Perform (yellow)...

    Harrison L5 3HP Lathe

That sounds rightish for an imperial Norton box. My old L5 with the abc gearbox had a load of changewheels with it, the replacement L5A in imperial with Norton box had almost no additional wheels. The larger wheel was I think 100, a couple of smaller wheels like maybe 40 and 50. Certainly no...

    Pipe /AC/ Stud Detectors

I tend to agree, but have you tried the trick of placing your "spare" hand flat on the wall a foot or two to the side of where you are scanning ? That can improve the performance of the cheap Bosch detectors sometimes. There has been previous discussion on the forum about the very expensive...

Recip saw blades for Metabo SSE 18 LTX?

Cheers Chris. I think Toolstation wanted most of £19 for a single blade but it was a decently long new Bosch with the continuous strip of carbide brazed to the edge and all the teeth ground into it. When they come up on sale I'd like to try some of these things out. They might well last as long...

    Beginner router kit

The Makita package is absolutely standard. It's a trim router. A 1/4" collet is appropriate. Bigger collets aren't really. Imagine trying to control a big 1/2" shank bit in a single handed trim router format. It's inviting disaster. Routers are used for such different things that including a...

Recip saw blades for Metabo SSE 18 LTX?

What about the usual suspects : Lenox Milwaukee Bahco Bosch ? There's a youtube channel called "last best tool" that opened my eyes to the fact that there is an incredible range of these things and I notice both Lenox and Bosch doing loads of specialist blades including carbide edged that...

    Fobco Star Restoration

Simplifying and giving a practical example just using a 1:1 ratio through the belt: You have 4 pole motor, 1400rpm spindle at 50Hz At 20Hz it will do 40% of speed so 560rpm At 100Hz it will do 200% of speed so 2800rpm 2800/560 = 5 That's a 5:1 ratio not a 10:1 And it is a very specific setup...

Where to buy electrical cable 6491X

Subject to doing the maths on voltage drop etc: He'll be putting in sockets around the wall of one big room, so the cable is following the same route whether you put in a ring or two radials each going halfway around and near enough meeting at the opposite side of the room. The topology actually...

    Cable

Your electrician has to be responsible for "design, specification, installation and test". Talk to him first. Explain what you want on the end of it and let him tell you what to buy and how to install it if he is amenable to you doing the labouring. He may or may not.

Slow Speed Bench Grinders in the UK

Look at the technical info provided by manufacturers of CBN wheels. They are all well within SF/M recommendations running on a standard 3000 rpm 8" grinder. CBN has good thermal conductivity. There's no need to get a slow speed grinder.

Excellent and welcome ! I just hope the "grumpy old Yorkshireman" doesn't extend to grumbling about politics. We have too much of that as it is !

Where to buy electrical cable 6491X

I did this in my much smaller shop and consider it a good solution. I had no issues getting a couple of 4mm singles into the terminals of any metalclad faceplate. One oversized loop around the wall pretty much sorts the 13A outlet requirement. As all your machinery will be on switched CE sockets...

    Fobco Star Restoration

I imagine with the age of a Fobco star, it'll be an imperial size motor so you can't just swap in a modern metric one without modifying the mount and boring or sleeving the motor pulley. You should still be able to get a single phase imperial easy enough but you may have to pay a bit for it.

    Fobco Star Restoration

Rubbish. A VFD is no substitute for changing belts. Dial it down to 1/4 speed and you only have 1/4 the power. You have none of the torque increase that you get from downgearing through the pulley ratios and which you need to twist a large diameter cutter in a drill. I'm not knocking VFD's...
