    Welding Squares

How about simple non magnetic welders clamps ? I bought a couple of these on ebay 2 years back and they are certainly robust. Similar things, albeit smaller, are readily available.

Yeti Tools Ltd (Smartbench CNC) placed into Administration

This is a belated report as it took place in July 2024, but the UK company who designed and developed the Smartbench range of transportable CNC routers were placed into Administration this summer. Yeti Tools sold some thousands of their distinctive machines, many of them overseas, but have the...

HELP I need a new desktop PC

Not at all recently, I decided I needed a windows box for just a few programs and opted for an all solid state M series "tiny" PC by Lenovo. Now Lenovo's online sales channel has an apalling reputation - online sales are handled by a 3rd party - but if you want a desktop machine, I do like the...

    Quickline broadband?

In our neighborhood it's Nexfibre (owned by essentially the same shareholders who own Virgin Media) who dug up our streets and did exactly the same. I took their 300 odd Mbit/s deal as it offered 10x the bandwidth for the same money as I was paying for broadband over the phone line. The three...

How Unsafe Is it?? Extension leads etc

I'm onboard with Fitzroy. A single extension plugged into the shop vac does carry some risks but nothing that couldn't happen easily enough anywhere. The main thing to avoid is ever using that extension as a convenient socket to plug in a high power / long run time device like a heater or...

    President Elect's 'top team'

This belongs in OT2, but I'm going to let it be for a while in the hope that some sensible conversation can emerge, and not that this is just a chance to vent. If our members from outside the UK, and especially those from the USA would like to share their views for or against, that could make...

How Unsafe Is it?? Extension leads etc

Remember, if you turn down the speed of a motor using some variable device, you also turn down it's power and make it more likely to stall. This often makes variable speed less useful rhan you might think.

How Unsafe Is it?? Extension leads etc

Absolute no to your ideas about the vfd. They should be programmed to match the specific motor connected so you would be continually reprogramming it. The manual of every vfd will tell you that the motor should be hard wired to the vfd as you can potentially damage the drive running it with no...

    Climate change policy

@Spectric 's post threw me back to thinking about childhood and how different the world was just 60 years ago. Others will remember more. It reminds me that the only constant is change. In my experience it's better to embrace change and have some influence over what happens to you than be...

    Climate change policy

Ouch ! That's almost as "idealised" as King Charles' arcadian visions of English villages. I remember some happy days like that but I also can't help but see it as a terribly old fashioned and frankly sexist portrayal. As far back as I can remember, many mothers have needed to work or chosen to...

    Simple Burglar Alarm for Workshop

I'd be minded to include a brutally loud sounder INSIDE the building as well as anything outside. Fire alarm sirens are designed to be so loud you can't ignore them, that sort of idea. 120dB maybe more, up at the level where it physically hurts and will cause hearing damage if you hang around in...

    VERUM'S LATEST TOOLS ARE HERE!

Perhaps after Harrogate, as you must be neck deep in prep for the show, could you tell us something about the improvements you've made over Luban's standard planes ? Thanks !

    Foil Insulation for attic

Pretty much what I did. After changing the fibre between the joists, I just boarded over the joists with chipboard, laid loose. Fibre insulation tends to settle under gravity so you soon get an inch air gap under the boards if no already there to start with. In summer, the heat in our loft is...

    Foil Insulation for attic

The damp will come from inside the home, warm, humid bodies and make it's way outward. If you have a vapour barrier, it should be on the inner side to stop damp making it's way into the insulation. Not on the outside where it will trap moisture inside the insulation. I don't see anything wrong...

    Pickaroon- very useful

Like the homemade one Noel ! The shaft won't have the same profiling otherwise I'm struck that what you've made eminds me of a climber's peg (ie piton) hammer, sharpened up. Mind, some of those were made by Stubai. I wonder if the early climbers didn't just repurpose the sappie of their day...

    Climate change policy

Discuss climate change policy by all means. If we can't keep political slanging out of it this goes to OT2.

    Pickaroon- very useful

Looks great. You can tell from the flare at the end of the shaft that it's just going to feel great and give a super grip.
