    low angle smoother

Fleyh, I wrote two other articles about handle design and positioning. One of the conclusions I came to is that the bed angle, handle angle, and position of the handle create a system. One factor affects all. Getting them in synch is the target...

    low angle smoother

Niall, as mentioned earlier, better construction and materials (such as ductile iron) made the re-introduction possible. The early Stanley #62 (I have one) were fragile and the mouths would chip owing to the thin grey iron construction. These early planes were only intended for planing end...

    Makita Plunge Base

I have these two along with the Makita plunge base. They are fully interchangeble. The dust control from the plunge base is not great. I have since added an 8mm collet to both, and begun using 8mm bits rather than 6mm. Too early to draw conclusions, but I expect the 8mm bits to produce a...

    low angle smoother

Jacob, the short answer is "yes", but the fuller answer is "not necessary". To qualify the latter statement, it is dependent on how and where you direct the force on a Bailey handle. This is an article I wrote in 2015 when reviewing the Veritas Custom Planes - Designing a Plane: Handles and...

    low angle smoother

I have responded to this issue many times. Eventually I simply wrote an article on my website (which turned into a series of articles on tool design). This was written in 2013 ... This article was written in response to a request on Saw Mill Creek to explain what I meant by Centre of Effort. I...

    low angle smoother

BU or LA planes got a bad reputation as a result of their fragile construction until they began being made with ductile iron in the 1990s. Then they were used with inadequate cutting angles - blades with 25 degree bevels - until it became understood that a high cutting angle changed everything...

HELP I need a new desktop PC

I'm going against the grain ... Get an iMac. Yes, I know you are comfortable with Windows, so get a Windows emulator software, such as Parallels, and you will be able to run all your Windows software at the same time. Then take the time to get used to the Mac, and discover what Windows wants to...

anyone tried a slightly larger blade in a Festool 55 tracksaw?

I think that you need to re-read my posts. Regards from Perth Derek

anyone tried a slightly larger blade in a Festool 55 tracksaw?

To repeat ... The blade cannot move further inward than the inside flange permits. As long as the set of the teeth is the same, the blade cannot cut further inward. A thicker blade will increase the kerf width, but towards the outside. Regards from Perth Derek

anyone tried a slightly larger blade in a Festool 55 tracksaw?

Actually, I think a thicker blade should be fine - it sits on a flange and the extra width moves it away from the track, not towards it. So the anti-splinter strip remains untouched. Even the splitter should not be affected (it will simply ride inside the kerf. Regards from Perth Derek

    Trend MFT jig

Use the Trend template with inserts (dogs) to determine if it is set up accurately. This will alert you whether the problem lies with the template or human error when using it. I had a friend make up a larger template version with a CNC machine, and made my own MFT table. It is certainly...

    Dowel making

I bought a couple if these from Temu, in metric and imperial ... They work well. You need to use a socket to grip the end of the dowel. Choose straight grain. Regards from Perth Derek

    Renovating a Dining Table

It wasn't in the original plan, but it became apparent that some of the legs had gaps that indicated they were only held by the pegs ... So ... to start, all the pegs were drilled out. To do this, first pull the legs in tight with a clamp to ensure that the tenon is not chewed up ...

    Renovating a Dining Table

Well, after the glue dried and the clamps were removed, I was not thrilled with the result. The width of the split was too great for my liking. At around 3mm, it would need filling, and I had decided that I did not want to fill any splits. The table is old and splits happen. Just not a split...
