    Cleaning up a Coronet Major

Thank you, it's lovely bringing old tools back to life. I used ordinary Johnson's Paste Wax, a tin of which I've had for about 20 years. I've just picked up a tin of microcrystalline wax to use on tools and metal surfaces which seems to last a bit longer from what I've read.

    Cleaning up a Coronet Major

I wondered if the jaws were reversible, haven't tried yet but will have a look later. This is the only set of jaws I have with this chuck. I've cleaned up one of the two coil spring chucks but they have a limited range of size tenon they can clamp. I'm waiting to hear back from @Morty who may...

    Cleaning up a Coronet Major

Latest little update: a three jaw chuck came with the lathe which is, as far as I remember from my school engineering class, more of a metalworking chuck. Is the reason not to use a metal chuck for woodworking due to the shape of the jaws for holding a tenon on a bowl? It's a Beco 5" model. I...

What to add to my turning tool collection?

Hopefully you can see them better in these. My first go at sharpening skews and just following the instructions that came with the grinder. Freehand on the plate thats part of the one way system. Not completely even angle on each side but hopefully I’ve not gone too far wrong. Please let me know...

What to add to my turning tool collection?

I'll take a better close up of them. I did them on an 8" grinder.

What to add to my turning tool collection?

Meanwhile, I've just ordered a 1 ¼" roughing gouge, ⅜" bowl gouge and ¼" parting tool, all by Hamlet. Should now give me a suitable small set of tools to experiment with and I have some spare carbon steel tools to explore different grinds with as I need to. Thanks for all the help and advice.

What to add to my turning tool collection?

Thanks for mentioning, definitely something to keep my eye on when I use them.

What to add to my turning tool collection?

There were definitely a bunch of tools made out of old files in the box I was given, I've set those aside for other metalworking things. The scrapers that are partially painted black seem to be a set and don't have any obvious markings left over that look like they were files. Is that style of...

Lathe chucks, what do I have here?

Thanks for that, very useful. Now to disappear down the polishing rabbit hole to find out what sort of mops and compounds to buy :)

What to add to my turning tool collection?

Good to know for the future that I can get HSS bar, that hadn't occurred to me and I like making my own tools. The starter set sounds a lot like what I'm trying to put together :)

What to add to my turning tool collection?

Had a thought this morning, dangerous, I know :) and then grabbed a grinder and a couple of flap wheels to attack those Sorby spindle gouges. Half an hour later and after a trip to the grinder, they now look like this. The larger one doesn't fit in the oneway guide so that was done...

    Cleaning up a Coronet Major

Bought a correctly sized belt and fitted it, runs much more quietly now. Had a couple of great chats with Derek Pyatt, the guru of all things Coronet who provided the thread protector, a cover for the planer, a proper manual for the lathe and information on how to adjust the play out of the...

What to add to my turning tool collection?

Thanks very much, I can probably make one of those from the various scrapers in the pile.

What to add to my turning tool collection?

I have a decent sharpening system, bought a grinder, wheels and the one way jig from Hope Woodturning. I needed a new grinder so good excuse to get a one and done system for everything. Dovetail scraper for making the base to fit into a chuck?

What to add to my turning tool collection?

Thanks Paul, that’s good to know. Sounds like buying a new spindle and bowl gouge will be the way forward so I have something decent to start with. Any opinion on which sort of parting tool to get? I enjoy bringing tools back to life so it’s something I’ll work on now and then and see how I...

What to add to my turning tool collection?

Thank you. They mostly seem to be finished with a lacquer or varnish which is cracking so I was planning to take the handles off, chuck them on the lathe and sand them smooth and treat with oil. I have regular linseed, blo, danish oil and some beeswax in the cupboard so figured the oil would be...

What to add to my turning tool collection?

That's great, thanks very much indeed. I'll have a proper read tomorrow.

What to add to my turning tool collection?

Thank you Richard, that’s just what I needed to know. I’ll make up an MDF wheel to polish out the pits and give it a try.

What to add to my turning tool collection?

That’s what I’m trying to do here, figure out what I’ve got so I’m only using a small set of tools but to make sure the set I build has all the basics. I didn’t know if what I thought was a bowl gouge actually is :)
