Morticers recommendation: Sedgwick, Multico K or Multico M series

The main problems with the grub screw attachment of an auger is two fold, first you need a few collars to suit tge auger shaft diameters. These are often lost and you need to get new ones machined up. Secondly the grub screw, they get mangled, stuck through saw dust, rust etc. and if you haven’t...

Morticers recommendation: Sedgwick, Multico K or Multico M series

Multico offers excellent value for money, but weren’t as well built as say a Sedgwick. They are more difficult to sell on and for this reason I don’t restore them (with the exception of their superb tenoner) For this reason I don’t usually recommend them, and steer people towards a Sedgwick...

Very very Nice Bling Safe Sliding Saw by Altendorf.

This is worth a watch, just before you go into the shop😂 For a commercial shop, to not buy a saw with such a safety device I think would be a very poor decision. Why, well, the stats are clear that the circular saw is one of the most frequent causes of serious injury, so on your risk...

What is the size of this bearing?

I suspect you’ve not read the number correctly. I know, I’ve sometimes found the stamping to be very hard to interpret. Have a look in the manual, sometimes they give the bearing numbers, and if not, and the machine is still manufactured put a query into them.

Now you understand, you’ve got it exactly. First principle after doing the risk assessment, remove the opportunity for it to occur.

    Tenons!

Yep, the rails and styles were ripped, planed and turned and glued back together again. The tenons are wedged. I’ve made them with booked matched styles before today, ripped both styles and swapped one half of each style with the other. Most don’t notice it, but it made me smile when they did...

Large drill bits - why so long?

Im in the camp of do it properly to the best of your ability all of the time, it’s then second nature and requires no thought. Practice makes perfect. There are a number of reasons why you always check concentricity, the most important for ground stock is that if it isn’t concentric then it’s...

Very very Nice Bling Safe Sliding Saw by Altendorf.

I always ignore the price, every new bit of technology initially starts with a premium, it’s the fact that the innovation has occurred. There is probably a patent, and for every patent there is always a work around, so at some point, the technology will become sufficiently cheap that it can...

    Tenons!

The styles have shrunk in the kitchen, we still have a ‘wonderful’ climate warming AGA so it’s always around 50C in there. It’s an old chapel, so I left them protruding as they shrank….…..as I tell the wife…….truth is CBA to plane them back smooth😂 The rails are split and glued back on...

    Tenons!

Perfectly fine, a door I made out of oak, styles spilt and turned back on themselves to reduce twist and bow. Nearly 20 years old now.

Very very Nice Bling Safe Sliding Saw by Altendorf.

I think my kids missed out not having the character building experience or chance to earn a few pennies sweeping under the looms and spinning Jennies or opening the traps in the mines. perfectly safe as long as you kept your head down, didn’t poke your fingers where they weren’t supposed to be...

Large drill bits - why so long?

My bad, apologise. Same question though, one or two hands makes no difference, it’s still a slip clutch arrangement. I believe @Sideways has a gruesome story of what happens.

Large drill bits - why so long?

@stuart little How does that work? I know @Sideways created a solution at his company, but I don’t understand how holding it with one hand is OK? The friction increases and I would have thought increased the chance of a grab pulling your hand in.

Very very Nice Bling Safe Sliding Saw by Altendorf.

Self driving?? My company car self drove up to 15 miles an hour (that’s going back a few years) on the motorway and Elon has taken it further. Trains can already drive themselves, planes take off and land without pilot’s intervention. Won’t be long before self driving cars will be standard……but...

Very very Nice Bling Safe Sliding Saw by Altendorf.

It’s funny, it always amuses me the debate over safety devices. Me, I wear that manby pamby seat belt, ensure my car has air bags every where, anti skid, anti brake something or other, look forward radar etc etc. makes me feel far more secure as I boy race everywhere knowing I can’t have an...

    Invoice dispute

The old process if I recall correctly used to have a series of charges, as you went through the process. The latest is just one charge (£150 I think) when you start. (Under £5K claims . Or something around it) If the 14 day letter doesn’t work, then yes, you do have your day in the county court...

Large drill bits - why so long?

I rank myself as amateur, there are a whole load of far more knowledgeable people than me. If I caught you holding with your fingers emery cloth in a lathe that would be the last minute you worked in the shop. If the emery cloth catches, (what he was doing is exactly how a friction band clutch...
