    Hock HC blade arrived this morning,featherlight shavings from my non fettled Stanley 4 1\2.Nearly as good as a cabinet scraper.

    Start out with a light coloured timber.easier to see pencil and knife marks.These tend to get lost in the darker woods.

    I have a 4 1\2 Stnley smooth plane,which is the best replacement blade,the one that will fit without too much adjustment to the plane body.clifton,Hock,nielson or the Japanese lminated blades.

    I have always had trouble with these,I have fitted some to a small bookcase door,with the usual problem.The catches are stong enough until attached to the door then they have a weak magnetic attraction.Has anyone got a foolproof way of attaching these please.

    Thanks Karl,doesn't sound as if it will be any use to me I regularely resaw 5" stock with my old Makita 8" sawbench it will even tackle Oak.I was looking for a 10" saw for a bit more capacity and easy storage.
