    8 point sockets

12 point sockets can roundoff a square nut or plumbing plug if a lot of force is needed. I still have 4 point, 8 point and weather head sockets (3 sided to fit over plumbing elbows) from when I was an aircraft mechanic. They didn't get a lot of use but they didn't damage alloy fittings. Pilots...

1.1 - Wadkin RS Lathe ¦¦ Elephants Foot + Tool Rest

Acetone and ATF mixed 50/50 is what I have heard the most often. WD40 was made to displace water and it barely does that. As a penetrating oil there are others that are better. Pete

    Coloured epoxy - Small amounts

Would Milliput putty work? Pull off what you need and then knead it until mixed. Trowel it into the knot hole and sand when cured. https://www.milliput.com/index.html Pete

    Woodhaven2 heads up

I went to have a look and I can read the Home Page and I can open a Forum page but can't look at any threads. A page opens up telling me I have to join. Probably me but if a site is closed to me having a little look around it will never have me as a member. 👋 Pete

    House name on a post…

Around here people bolt a plasma cut steel plate to a big boulder at the corner of the driveway. The signs may be just the family name and address number to more artistic wolves howling, bear with a salmon in their mouth etc. You could look into what is available locally for a plasma cut sign...

    Help: converting 230V (1ph) 50Hz machines to run on 220V (1ph) 60Hz supply

What do the makers of these machines say about running 60Hz? Do they have different motors ie different part numbers for the two markets or are they the same? Most of mine say 60Hz except for a belt/disc sander 6"x 48" with a 12" disc that says 50Hz/60Hz. It was made in Taiwan. Pete

    British Sumer Time Note

Kids here get driven to school or take a school bus that stops in front of their house until they grow up enough to drive a car. Morning sunlight isn't a factor anymore. Pete

Retirement workshop - which machines to buy?

Since your shop is in the future you have time to read and learn about dust collection. Here is a link that summarizes it. https://billpentz.blogspot.com And here is a more detailed one of the same. It will take you quite a while to go through. A hard read but as it also tells you how to make...

    Faded japaning.

I'm not a hand tool aficionado so If my suggestion is a bad one forgive me. What happens when you put a small amount of paste wax on the dulled paint? Pete

    Latest Wall Panelling job

Very nice work. What are the strips in the baseboards. Almost look like LEDs. Are you using MDF since it is all going to be painted? My wife wants a downstairs bedroom painted a black called Wrought Iron and I added some MDF over the drywall on a couple walls to simulate Arts and Craft style...

    Cleaning abrasives

My hesitation using hardened silicone caulk is that silicone in lubricants and spray wax polish that gets on wood may cause fish eyes or other finishing problems. So I don't use them in my shop at all. They can even migrate from one machine surface to another and cause issues. I wonder if...

    Wood movement and book-shaped boxes

A suggestion that is a little unorthodox. Make those two sides with endgrain. Glued to the bottom "cover", "front pages" and "spine" it will move the same amount as the rest of the "book" and never crack. As long as you don't use thin pieces or subject the "book" to extremes like beating someone...

    Cleaning abrasives

Find some Crepe soled shoes. Same stuff. My buddy wore Hush Puppies for years and all his old ones ended up beside the belt sander. Another soft rubber type might work. A new use for Crocs perhaps. Pete

    British Sumer Time Note

Saskatchewan doesn't do the clock switching thing like the rest of Canada does. There is a state or two in the US that doesn't either. Don't have to change up the clocks or any of that nonsense. The dogs still bug us to be feed all the time, earlier the better. I only notice the time differences...

Surely a huge gap in the market?

"They would have the quietest motors avaliable" Basically there are two kinds of motors. Induction that are quiet because they run at low speeds but they are heavy. Universal (carbon brushes) that are light weight but scream like a router or portable planer. You could go old school and put a...

    Makita thicknesser setup issues

I don't have one so took a look at the manuals. Parts manual shows the Philips screw (may be the Japanese version, they are slightly different) left in the picture doesn't do anything more than hold the table. You could try and loosen one a touch and see if the table can be moved up a touch. I...
