    Replacing a floor

Thanks for the reply - the client IS one of those people who draw up legally binding contracts - a notary. :) Since I can't establish clearly what the code requires for such a job here, what would I have to do in the UK for the job to be approved?

    Replacing a floor

Thanks for the first reply. The floor is not rotten - just woodworm eaten. I don't think I have any choice but to put the new ones on the ground for height reasons. Any more help please?

    Replacing a floor

I've got to replace a floor that's been eaten by woodworm. It is in the local lawyer's office and the secretary's chair just made a hole in the floor. I've just got back from patching it. The current floor is pine t+g nailed to joists which are sitting on the ground. If I replace the joists...

    Edging and edgebanders

My apologies for digging something up from the past, but I need an edge bander and have seen the Virutex, one labelled Felder and a Czech one at Axminster. If anyone has an update, I'd be very grateful as for my one man shop the 2k plus outlay is a big step, but I need to increase my...

    Mitre trimmer advice please

I have the Axminster trimmer and have only used it occasionally since I bought it about a year ago - but have been very pleased. Until a couple of days ago when I tried to trim some profiles I had made out of Jotoba - some exotic hardwood that I bought cheap from our equivalent of B & Q. The...

    Removing an oak floor

Sorry that does look idiotic doesn't it - what I mean is that the imperial measurements are approximative as I don't work with feet and inches any more

    Removing an oak floor

No - it really is a proper floor laid on joists - the planks are over two feet long and about 3 and 1/2 inches wide (I work in metric) and 3/4 inch thick and the joists are spaced about 18 inches apart. That's how they used to do it here - I suppose the term "parquet" might cause confusion - a...

    Oak plank thickness?

Over here (Normandy) I think they use chestnut pegs in timber frame construction. They are seasoned and fairly hard. Don't know if they would be any good for green wood - I spend my life surrounded by MDF :( :(

    Lidl next Monday (16th)

I've got the Lidl one's - more than accurate enough for my standard of wood butchery - but at the start of the thread someone ask about a Stanley Intellimeasure. If you haven't already bought one my advice would be beware. I bought a Stanley measure for about 50 euros and it was useless. I...

    Removing an oak floor

Thanks for the replies. It is "t & g" solid flooring on the ground floor - here we would call it parquet flooring - and it is "secret nailed", with long (now rather rusty) steel nails with a fairly large round flat head. Any further suggestions please??

    Removing an oak floor

Perhaps herringbone is the wrong term then. In French (where I've been for the last 20 years!!) they call it "Bâtons rompus", but I'm embarassed to say I don't know what I should call it in English. I've got some pictures of the floor but don't know how to make them available. Planks are just...

    Removing an oak floor

I've got to try to lift and then relay about 500 square feet of oak tongue and groove flooring laid in a herringbone pattern. Seems to be nailed into the joists at either end of each piece. I'm hoping to save most of the boards but could manufacture some replacement pieces. A colleague has...

    Oak in France

I wish I was near enough to take a look - I'm in NW France. I don't know much about buying timber like that, but wonder if they are good enough to cut up into planks. A lot of the oak trees around here seem to go for firewood.

    Multico PM22T Mortiser

I need to buy a hollow chisel mortiser to build some barn doors for a client. I now work in France and have found that the Multico is now made over here and it seems from the info available to be a high quality machine. But it is hugely expensive and I cannot get to see one in the metal...
