Hi All

Really really really pleased with this.

Not just because I think it looks nice and its the first thing I've made on my new bench (more on that later) in my new shed, but because I've learnt so very much in making it.

Thanks to Olly and Steve M for the help with the info on the wedges but I got carried away and wanted to finish it so didnt change the orientation.

shoulders of the legs could have been a titch tighter to the seat but I'm really pleased with how tight everything else is.

Mortices all cut by hand. I found this surprisingly easy and accurate. Took about 1 1/2 hours total but I was taking my time.

The wood is from a pile of off cuts that I picked up from Emmaus in St Albans for a couple of quid. Wedges are mahogany.

First time I've done wedged tenons and really pleased with how tight they pulled up.

Its her birthday in a couple weeks so I'll let her have it then.

It does look good, my only comment would be you normally have the wedges going across the grain rather than with it. Reason being is that with the wedges as you have them you are forcing the fibres apart and you can get splits; hopefully you'll be okay as it normally happens straight away and you have a nice thick piece of timber.

Look forward to seeing your next piece

thanks guys

BigShot - Yes I used glue on the tenons, then straight away put a small amount of glue on the wedges and hammered them in. A lot easier than I first thought actually. Was a bit worried I was going to knacker the whole thing!!

Ironballs - yes, I raced ahead with the wedges then realised what I'd done before Steve and Olly set me straight. The seat is very thick as you say and it all seems good still.

One of the lessons I learnt from this piece!

really quite chuffed.

I had the impression it would be quite hard too.
Good to hear it isn't, I'll be doing some wedging soon too.

Cheers.

Looks good. Those hand-cut mortises look very tidy. Time to put some kind of finish on it now, I think. :)
