I am looking at the ulmia 348 mitre saw- the smallest model that they do/did I think. The one that I have seen on eBay is missing the saw. It looks to be different to the new model and seems to use a backsaw rather than a frame type.

Does anybody know about these- can I use an alternative backsaw? It is going to be used for small pieces- pen blanks and similar. Accuracy and quality of cut are more important than speed.

The same model is here https://pedder-altedamenauskiel.blogspo ... w.html?m=1

Thanks
Mark

Hi Mark,

if it is a 348 D, you can use an alternative backsaw. To know if it is, when the saw is missing, look for the railguards / bearings. There must be the blank part screwed to the red part like here:

And yes you can use alternative saws.
I made a alternative saw for a 348 D:

perfect, thanks Pedder.

I think that I may have a go at this one- there are not many good quality small mitre saw boxes available over here- they tend to be huge

well, ebay offer accepted, so should be here in a few days. It looks exactly like yours pedder, so I presume it is the 348D

Pedder, I have just had my ulmia delivered and it is in very nice condition. It has the length stop bars- should there be some form of screw to fix the long one in its hole in the cast iron bed?

Hi Marcos, there is a hole for the screw in the base for the short part.

My workshop contents are currently in plastic boxes all over my house;
I had a new water supply pipe routed, after the old one burst.
(don't ask).

In one of those boxes is my Ulmia 348 with original saw
(although no length stops).

it's a lovely little thing, and extremely robust. I tend to use
it for "high quality" cutting to length, rather than mitres.

(I also own a Nobex Champion...)

Hey marcros,
I have the same mitre saw and I´m going to build my own alternative backsaw for it.
So you could have the original backsaw to complete your mitresaw.
I can send you some pictures if you want, but they are too big for this forum, maybe via PM or eMail.
The teeth of the saw definitely have to be reshaped and resharpened.

Best regards,
Jayzufu
