Breathtaking. Absolutely brilliant.

I want it, and I can't even play the guitar!

If you have any more pictures, or words about how you found and worked that stunning piece of wood, please tell us more.

Wow that is stunning!

I had a good look at your site, some beautiful work. I really enjoyed your blog and seeing how it was made. Do you make basses full time?

I'm only a hobbyist luthier (only built one so far) but your work has inspired me to make more!

Thanks, nice to know someone is reading it :) and yes, I work full time as a luthier.

How did you do the finish Simo?

My guitar was done using waterborne lacquer and with all the wet sanding (and occasional burn through to bare wood :( ) it took bloody weeks! I watch a lot of youtube vids about finishing but lot of the products they use are American and not availbable here.

I'm keen to find a better way of doing it!

Yep.. been there, done that  I used Liberon Finishing Oil, which is basically 'Danish oil' with a bit more resin content.

Nice job Simo!

=D>

I looked through your WIP but I couldn't see a reference as to how you filled the voids in the burr, I'd be interested to know the method you followed? Whatever it was it seems to have been very successful! The Barnsley Workshops and a number of other makers are increasingly designing furniture where they work cabinet panels and other components from solid burrs.

I've been surprised, solid burr machines and works far better than I expected, provided tools and tooling are razor sharp, so it's interesting to see you take the same approach with luthier work.

You mentioned in the WIP that you were going to put this guitar up for sale, is that still the plan?

Thanks :) Fortunately this piece only had relatively small cracks, no large voids. I used black superglue to fill them, which worked out well.

Is this the same product as the finish you did in the WIPS thread?...
To finish the body I'm using a polyurethane based varnish, which I thin down about 50%, and apply with a cloth.

No, that was Fiddes poly varnish. The Liberon is mostly oil (and thinners) with a small about resin, which adds a bit more protection/build compared to a typical Danish oil.

Nice work Simo. It beats me how you can do it for £1200 including all hardware and case. I used to make guitars, and still occasionally make specials for people, but I could not get close to that price if I was doing it for a living. Well done indeed.
