Saw a BBC report on this guy a while ago. I have only see a few people make spoons on line, he's a favorite.

I make spoons, though mine are far FAR less impressive as the wood of the "bowl" always remains fairly thick at the moment.

I've made a few in the last couple of months, good fun, although the results to date are definitely on the rustic to firewood side

The wood I've been using is maple from a tree taken down in April this year, so probably not as "green" as is ideal, probably explains why I find it quite hard on the fingers and hands generally.

Cheers, Paul

Two very different types of spoon going on here. Barn the spoon's are greenwood, carved and finished using knives. The lovespoons are from seasoned wood, carved with gouges finished with a lot of sanding.

Lots of people make spoons like the ones Barn is carving. Indeed there is a whole festival dedicated to it - Spoonfest. Not many do it as a profession, it must be very hard to make money from, like most crafts. I can see why he has his own shop - not only can he show how they are made, but he can avoid the retailer markup - having 100% added to the price makes a lot of handcrafted goods uneconomic Almost all those that do green woodwork near full time make their real money from courses. This is why - as mentioned in another thread recently - the courses are quite expensive.

I've had a go at making spoons from both greenwood and seasoned. Most of my greenwood ones are not fit for much (one came out so big it makes a good garden scoop !). I had more success by turning spoons on the pole lathe ... you turn the outside, split in two the hard way, then scoop out the bowls to make a pair of spoons, like so:

Barns is using an impressively large spoon knife. Makes the cutting/levering out of the bowl look easier than with the smaller easily available knives I've used. Do you think it a homemade one or are they commercially available?

Cool,
He says you need just the few tools but didn't mention you will also need his custom made jumper for east pocket access :)

I like his passion
