Zen have just advised that there are offering 8mb upgrades without extra charge. It may take a week - can't wait.

Andy

what the hell are you going to do with 8mb? 512 is plenty for me.

Wizer,
I've no idea to be honest but as I'm not paying any extra I though I had better take advantage.
Of course whether of not my phone line can cope with the full 8mb is another matter. I've been trying to calculate distance between the house and the exchange but as I do not know which way the wires go this is inconclusive. I could be as much as 4.5km way or a close as 2.5km :?

Try running Netmeterit will give you all sorts of stats on what you are averaging.

It's unobtrusive and it's free.

have just signed up to bt, broadband, because they are offering VOIP when you have one of their packages. will let you know how it works next week when it is all hooked up, mind you the first cd was nbg. so couldn't load on my due day.

and, help is in india, talk about language barrier.

Colin,
I am certain that I get nowhere near the 20gb limit. Zen reckon that 80% of their users use less than 20gb.
I would suggest that unless you are downloading countless music files, or movies, or file sharing, that you would get near the 20gb limit.

Andy

Colin,
I've just spotted this on the Zen site.

"From April 2006, a function will be available in the Customer Portal for each customer to see their usage".

Andy

Depends what you use it for - lots of games companys offer download as an alternative to shop bought or if you like to take part in beta testing then you can find these download limits causing problems (50 gig doesn't sound to bad though! Depends how many users you have lol)

Kane

PS as an example the recent DDO beta download was nearly 2 gig before the 7 hour download of patches (512k broadband) and regular patching sessions in between :)

50 gig in a month is plenty of through out for normal web usage.

1% of the net users use 98% of the bandwidth, most of us arnt touching the through put.

a 2mb connection (a good one so say getting 1.7/1.8 mb) can do a max of about 600gig in a month if used 24/7

most firms these days will reduce the speed of your connection at peak (sunday & monday, often Tuesday) to make sure that everyone can get online and stay on line for normal usage. That means that the guys who are downloading the internet onto their PCs can still do it, but it means that they get reduced throughput at peak and everyone else gets a chance.

I have friends on 20mbps broadband from NTL and they get 2mb connections at peak.

8mb will be much more useful when SKY by broadband and other TV and HD TV stuff starts coming down your broadband, off your PC and direct o0nto your TV, through an Xbox 360 for example..

I'm currently on Blueyonder's 4mb service and it's being upgraded to 10mb October 2005...

... Yup that date is correct... Due to some sort of fubar with people who are upgraded getting a WORSE connection after upgrades they had to slow the upgrade process down. First it was end of November, then end of January, then end of February and now looking at it the current estimate is end of April.

Still I'm happy with what I have got atm... Part of me wants to say stuff the upgrade if it's going to make it worse but that is unfortunatly not possible as the general upgrade means that everyone will be saturating the bandwidth anyway.

It makes you think that perhaps the network isn't ready for the 10mb but are just putting it out to keep users happy. One good thing about the upgrade is that 4mb users who were paying £50/month are now paying £35/month and will still be paying that when the upgrade is complete.

Now on the 8mb you are talking about... check the fine print and I'm betting it says ".. up to 8mb" and not straight 8mb.

John,
yes it is upto 8mb and this will not be available intil the exchange is upgraded to ADSL Max on the 31st March - the same date as just about every other exchange in the South East so not sure if that will happen.

In the meantime I have therefore got, in theory, a 2mb connection which at over the weekend seem to be running at 600kbps at the modem.
According to the modem stats on attenuation and line noise the line should be able to cope 8.6mb, again in theory.

Andy

31st March for BT Wholesale to upgrade the exchange to DSL MAX. Could be a few weeks after that your ISP migrates you onto the new product.

Prepare for a 10 day period of instability on your line though. When you go to 8Mb Max, my understanding is that you will start on 8Mb (or there abouts) and your line will then hand shake downwards until it reaches a speed that your line can sustain at a stable rate. Its called Dynamic Line Management on the BT IPStream products.

So for a long line with high noise, you could get stable at 3mb, but a better line could stablise at 6mb say.

But its the stabalisation period of ten days that could be difficult. Not 100% sure how difficult yet but it may be unpleasant.

2mb and then upwards might have been a better approach?

Lol my line is so bad it can only just manage 512k - am I jealous OH YES but the benefits of having no neighbours far outweigh the disadvantages :D

Kane

Well my exchange is now ADSL-Max enabled and I'm now running at 5984kbps.

It sure is fast compared with the 512kbps I was getting last night.

For example I no longer have to wait to watch the BBC's videos, they pop up instantly with no break up of picture.

Andy - a happy bunny

Waka,
I have a netgear wireless router. I go into the admin area and can view all sorts of stats. This method reports on the line speed to the router rather than to the PC which would be slightly less due to the wireless set up.

Andy (in danger of sounding as if he knows what he is talking about).

But that isn't the speed that you are seeing...I've just upgraded and although my router glibly says '8Mbps...yo!' when I do a speed test I'm still getting only 2Mbps. Zen say that it takes a few days to settle down.....I shall just have to wait and see.

Try the zen speedtest to see what you're really getting!

Roger,
I don't believe this:-

Download size: 200 KB
Download time: 16.384 seconds
Download speed: 98 Kbps (kilobits per second)

Taken from the Zen speed test.

I've on holiday now anyway, I'll see what it's like come easter.
