Well today is probably the peak of a rotten cold for Wifey and I. We were infected by our evil 2yr old daughter who did it on purpose, I'm sure ;). Typically she's starting to get her energy back just as we are quite literally dying!

For reasons we will not go into, I need this to clear up by Weds.

Currently dosed up on Lemsip and VitC.

What are your old wives tales for combating heavy colds?

I do not know about a cure, but a hot curry and a large glass of single malt certainly make me feel better. That and lots of Paracetamol to keep temperatures down.

Vitamin C only helps colds as a preventative, it does nothing when you actually have a cold. There is apparently some benefit from taking a large dose of Vitamin C as you feel a cold brewing, but once you have a cold there is no benefit.

Frugal
(who has been up since 7am dealing with 5 year old with a temperature and a sore throat).

Half a bottle of Woods Rum....oh sorry, Tom, forgot you don't imbibe IIRC. In that case a freezing cold shower should do the trick...you know, kill or cure :D

I sweat the crap out of it. Large dose of paracetamol, maybe a hot toddy, wrap up in a thousand layers and a duvet and sit next to a rad all day. You feel like crap but much better the next day.

Remember to keep the fluids topped up...

Sweat the crap out of it. I think "...the crap out of it" is my new motto

Correct Roger, I'm a boring non-drinker. Not out of choice I might add. Cold shower doesn't sound great, might suggest it to wifey tho 8)

Actually I think that these things run their course no matter what you do. I reckon I'll be past the worst of it by Weds.

You have to raise your body temp to kill the virus, but if it goes to high that will kill you.

I'll go turn both extractors on and sit between them then ?

Lemsip is good (but not so much for me as I am diabetic). Paracetamol, ice cream work as well.
I got a cold about three weeks ago, which was bad, but has since gone 'onto my chest' which means that I am constantly coughing up nasties. The antibiotics had no effect, and I can't do anything much without getting into real distress. Look after yourself!

I'm sure I rememeer reading somewhere that Russian Spetznats (sp?) troops were made to take ice cold showers for 5mins after a long run first thing in the morning. I think the idea was to raise the body temp with the run and then rapidly lower it with the shower. I think this was supposed to knock out any fledgling bactiria before they could cause illness.

That's what the told the troops anyway...

"Comerade Capitain! Why can't we have a nice, hot shower like the decadent Westerners?"

"Well, Sergei ....

Nack all pretty much, it will have to run its course. All you can do is keep yourself well fed and drink a lot of fluids

Missus left me some soup and buggered off out.

I'm pi$$ing like a bloody race horse

I would like to see some references for that, as I was always taught that the increase in body temperature was due to the increase in activity of antibodies (pryogens I think), so the rise in temperature is due to the activity of killing off the virus, not the other way around.

If you use the Lemsip capsules they have no sugar.
But it may not be that, my BG went through the roof today for no apparent reason at all, it happens when you have infections.

Woodbloke - it was the constant infections that led me out of teaching. My low immune levels meant that I was suffering every winter, often missing a month of work. Mind you, the infection I have at the moment is no better...

You obviously don't have small children or travel on the tube then. It's got to the point where I think I should do an MJ and wear a mask on the tube
