This is a little box I made to put my Mum's Christams presents in. It is made from yew and walnut.

It was going to have a drop in lid, but I think that I am going to hinge it now.

The Yew is offcuts from my Les Paul guitar top, and the walnut is also from the scrap box. It is finished with paste wax.

Thanks for looking.

I like the look of that!!! 8) !!!

I made this one for my mums christmas present last year

Like yours Yew and Walnut,....... minds think alike.
Nice one mate
Rich

These are both little beauts, the Yew looks fantastic, what's it like to work with, do you get a lot of tearout with the grain all over the place like it is :?:

Rich, really nice box. Interesting hinges, can I ask where you got them? What thickness are the sides?

With the router I rough out where the hinge will sit on both lid and carcase, trim up with chisels. Then I use the pillar drill down into the carcase. Did the first box with a cordless / that was a bit hairy so opted for the pillar instead. Ideally a fine mortise attachment would be great but not sure how small you can get them.

Thanks Martin. The yew wasn't too bad to work with, there was a little tear out but nothing major. As Rich says it finishes brilliantly.

lovin the grain pattern slim, what you putting in it?

I've got a pair of earings and a silk scarf so far. Luckily its only a small box or it could get very expensive.

Rich - thanks for the info. I think they're just the hinges I'm after.

Really nice work - both of you.

Are those hand-cut dovetails, Simon?

Thanks Olly.

Yes, the dovetails are handcut. I am still learning the technique and am a long way off the perfect joint yet.

Very nice box I do like the contrast between the yew and walnut.

My only critisism is that I think the dovetails could have done with being finer, but thats only my opinion.

Hi Waka, thanks for your kind comments.

When you say you think the dovetails could be finer, do you mean narrower pins?

Sorry I should have explained myself better, yes I did mean narrower pins, I think on a small box the narrower the better, it does set it off really well.

Having said that I think your box is excellent the way it is, the narrower pins is just my opinion.
