Anyone off to the Yandles show this weekend? Or any advice for a first visitor? Apart from leaving my credit card at home for safety that is! Also, I'll be staying in the area a couple of nights - anyone know the area, good places to eat? Pubs? I've only dashed up to Martock once before, didn't really get a chance to look around the area much.

Thanks in advance.

Charlie

Hi Charlie,
I plan on going on Friday. I don't know the area so can't help with places to eat etc.

No specific tips for the show although they discount their timber and they usually have some interesting pieces. It's worth a look.

I hope to have a look at the Charnwood W650 Tablesaw - it had a good review in British Woodworking and Good Woodworking.

Thinking about it for Friday mainly because I like going there.

Depends very much on the weather - the forecast is not looking too good at the moment?

It's probably best to sort out accommodation before travelling, it gets very busy in the area if you're looking for something 'affordable'. The Fleur-de-Lys in Stoke-Sub-Hamdon is very local and has pretty good rooms. I haven't stayed there for years but have eaten there in the evenings many-a-time and have never been disappointed.

I'm aiming to arrive late-morning on Friday, after I've been down to Plymouth to pick up my new toy  and, of course, I'll have to pop in to Axminster, first on the way back up (never been before)!

Saturday for me, would prefer Friday to pick over the timber store, but have work commitments unfortunately. Probably for the best as I don't really need or have space for any more timber

Cheers, Paul :D

Terry - it's ok I've got some very high-class accommodation already booked - a tent in a field. Hey it was cheap, and I've even got electric! ;-) Need to save pennies for the important things!

New toy Olly?

I'll be about both days I think, but more so Friday - hoping to pick up a few nice boards before the rush starts!

Hello fellas,

Been a while since I have posted on the site. So busy at work etc...

I can't make it to Yandles this year but have plans to go to Cressing Temple in a few weeks.

Hope to meet up with one or two forum friends at that do.

Glad to see that your all still kicking about.

Cheers, Tony.

Oh, it's nothing too exciting (it's certainly not black and green!!) - it's one of Axminster's engineering pillar drills that I'm picking up, used, for a good price. It's missing the rise and fall handle of the table, which is why I need to call in to their Devon branch on the way back (I also need some bobbin sander sleeves, but hopefully not much else...). It should be a slight upgrade from my current model, with several new among other things.

Yep, if you happen to see a battered and bruised Ford Escort with low suspension at the back, that'll probably be me! :D

Aha. I was in the Axminster store when it reopened some weeks back -it's now much bigger, and even harder not to come out without buying anything!

Funny, I have a much abused Ford Escort also - though if the suspension ends up too low, then I suspect so will my bank account balance!

Seriously though, if any forum members want to meet up for a coffee/beer or something - we should probably arrange that here in advance really!

Cheers,

Charlie

Yep, I know the feeling! Overloaded my car twice last year - once with a load of wood for my workbench (and then some...) and again, in September, with a mortiser I bought off eBay (I was amazed to find that the exhaust stayed on all the way back from Dorchester! ;-) ). This pillar drill's only around 80kg, which is probably about half of what the mortiser was... If it's like a lot of other drills then it should come apart quite easily as well.

Does anyone know whether Triton are going to be there, this year? I'm looking to buy one of their Dust Buckets, if there's a discount? Can't see their name on Yandles site though.

Olly, 80 Kg is only a mid sized adult (wish I weighed that little

Try and load the drill with the heaviest end between the axles and you will be fine.

Well, I've made it to Martock, and so far I can report: I've found the pub and the cider is good! :) Best take it easy though, otherwise my plan to make an early start tomorrow might not happen!

Leave some bargains for Saturday for the rest of us, you can keep the cider though

Cheers, Paul :D

Back from Yandles and the weather held up! :)

Very busy in the morning but much quieter when we left at 2:30ish.
Record have a very big presence in the area where CHT used to be (now in the Marquee). They were also selling Pax stuff, so must be tied up somewhere?

Could not find anything that I had gone to buy (veneer tape) but finished up instead with a load of Bessey products!
My friend was after some face masks and spare filters - this is the third time we have been there when they had no stocks!
With a Show you think they would stock up on everything - this was the first day?
