Hi all
I was looking at the Jet jss16 but reading various posts it seem their are a few niggles with this. My wife did mention that if its worth spending more on a saw to get a more proficient one then go for it. What's out their for up to £400???
Just a few I've seen

I would suggest the Hegner for two reasons.

It's a basic but very fine machine with which you will be very happy.
However most people upgrade their machines after a while and the Hegner will hold its value much better than the others.

I've had no problems with the Axminster AWFS18 and there is not need to upgrade it has 18in throat and variable speed.

I second Finney on this as I have the axminster 18inch saw as well. I think it is spot on so far with the projects I have done although I am learning. I have never used a hegner but felt at the time I bought my Axy that it so much more for the price. It's variable speed for example is used a lot.

Thanks guys. Stupid question time. Does it plug into mains electricity????

Hi rob39,

Further to Stooby's answer.
You could plug it in to a generator that outputs 240volts or possibly from a very large array of solar cells if you have them.
If you happen to have a source of running water like a stream or river on your property, you could arrange a watermill type thing.
I'm not too au fait with wind power but with a big enough propeller, it must be possible to power a 240 volt machine without using the mains !
Other than that I would stick with what Scooby said unless others here have more suggestions ?

Just as an aside the wirlygig wars are about to kick off (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bbHfovRxP44) I'm sure one of the contestants would be only too happy to look into powering it with the wind for the price of a couple of pints. :)

Probably my grammar could be better, What was mean't was would it need a transformer

Rob when I bought the single speed Hegner Mulicut 1,a very long time ago.I did not have the luxury of a forum to ask for help in choosing a machine. In fact I did not realize that there were other makes available, this I only found out since I joined the forum just over 12 months ago.
So I can only judge the Hegner which I bought, considering that I have used it more since I retired in 2003,and the only part I have replaced is the blade tension spring all the time I have owned it I think that my choice was a sound one.
I have not missed the variable speed, and the throat size has not been a problem to me,I would have not be able to upgrade to a better model because of the price. So you will have to consider that if you think that you will be happy with the machine of you choice and not expect to upgrade you will have to get the best of the choice you have got.I hope Rob you make the right choice. No Pressure :?

No problem Rob as I clearly misunderstood your question.
Why would you think you need a transformer as all the sites you linked to are UK sites and all state the machines to be 240v ?
The first 3 in the info and the last one in the title.
