Hi

I've seen some external doors made with the larger domino so wondered if you could successfully make internal doors with the smaller domino?

Cheers

Maybe just about...the biggest Domino for the 500 version is 50mm I think, but they are pretty sturdy and with the right material, and build technique, they would just about do. But really, they are borderline too small. The tenons should really go right through the stiles, for maximum strength, but you could always do a mock up first to see how strong they are....

I use both the 500 and 700 Dominos. IMO the smaller Domino is well up to the job for a lighter internal door...but depending on material thickness you may want to "stack" the Dominos which would remove much of the speed advantage versus a machine cut M&T. One other point, I read somewhere about an experiment on the strength of Domino joints that compared joints where just the mortice was glued to joints where both the mortice and the Domino tenon were glued. The latter was much stronger, I forget the exact figures but in the order of 30% stronger, so that'd be something I'd aim to do.

Following on from Mark's reply, he's right that most carpentry traditionally had through tenons that generally were also wedged, but my guess is that practise dates back to the era before reliable water proof glues, so was more about adhesive insurance than joint strength.
