Its difficult to keep the workshop clean, I seem to always be going round with a brush or airlining machines down.

One problem i was having was getting to the dust and chippings behind the radial arm saws.
I needed a hoover which was quick to use and put away, easy to empty.
I bought The cheapest leaf collector from B&Q and reduced the end down to give it a bit more oomph.
Fantastic hoover for £30. emptying is a simple as opening the zip on the collection bag.
Will take a pic tomorrow if anyones interested.

I'm interested - you should see the state of my hovel. I can't even get in there at the moment - at least not very easily. Its a case of step over this squeeze around that to get to the bench.

Cheers Mike

But Mike,

Those leaf collectors run on electricity.

I thought you didn't approve of electricity!

Its this one, just with extended pipework, The bag gets in a the way a bit, can be avoided with a more pricey one, But i'll put up with it to save some money!

what is the suction like ?

could it be used with a bigger bag as a dust/chip collector ?

Is it easy to retrieve all the pencils, tape measures and so on that get sucked into the whirlwind?! :D

Tell me about it! :D

That's one of the best things about my cyclone, if you pick up something off bench, then just kill the blower. Once it has stopped take the lid off the dust bin and retrieve the item from the top of the pile of dust and shavings. I lost a number of things smashed in the blower fan when it was part of a 'normal' dust collector.

As it comes its fairly poor suction, But a 100mm to 63mm reducer that i had spare from the axminster kit fitted nicely, Filled the gaps up with some 5 min PU glue,(took more than 5 mins to dry due to no wood moisture!) So really i suppose it could be used as a bigger system if you wanted to play about with the bag, But i have a proper bag collector on my table saw, and a 2hp Kufo extractor wall mounted and all plumbed to my radial arm saws with the 63mm axminster kit.

I have a standard roll about DC unit - the one with the top and bottom bags .

I just thought a small something for the odd hand power tool might come in handy from time to time. but then again - I guess I could just run some ducting and put a blast gate on the end !

Maybe this thread should be titled 'Workshop UN-tidiness  - if the comments are anything to go by that is.

I know just what it's like, there's never enough room for everything and never enough time to tidy the place up.

My place has a rough concrete floor and I want to put my machines on wheels so I can more easily move them to make space but it's not easy rolling stuff over that concrete.

So I've been laying some 8' x 2' chipboard flooring so I can have a nice smooth floor. It's not easy when the place is already full of stuff, I'll have to do it in sections

At the moment I have everything piled high in one half (don't ask me to find anything) and the other half has got a nice newly painted floor that actually looks too nice to walk on :) I painted it with tetrosyl floor paint so can't go in there until tomorrow when it dries :(

regards

Brian

They are also useful for blowing shavings out of things - I use one to clear the thicknesser when I'm using it

Workshop tidiness is easy. The night before the bin men come each week arm yourself with the following:
long handled soft haired broom
dust pan and brush
big black bin liner
mask
5 minutes to sweep up a weeks worth of crud and shavings and then into the bin liner. Then another 10 minutes with the shop vac to go round all the 'crooks and nannies' that you missed with the brooms. Do the bench top, dog holes, bench well and the tops of all surfaces where dust collects, clean out the accumulated dust from the innards of the bandsaw as well. It's easy to do if done on a regular basis, a bit of a 'mare if left and and the best benefit as far as I'm concerned is that I produce better work in tidy surroundings...tho' my shop is not quite as clean as Robert Inghams  - Rob

One important thing you left out, Rob. A place for everything and everything in its place. I think that's the most impressive thing about your workshop and why it is so tidy.

I've pinched a few of your ideas and I'm getting there but still some way to go......

Cheers

Paul - agree, that's true, but not everyone works like that. I like to rack it all out so that I can reach stuff pretty quickly and know where everything is...it would irritate me beyond belief  and make me even grumpier than at present  if I had to constantly start looking for kit in order to do a particular job. Long time readers of F&C will know what I mean about RI's 'shop as well, it's almost at 'operating theatre' standards  when you see pics of it...fantastic :) - Rob

I forgot my camera but took some ok pics with my phone, If i'd have had black silicone when i did it i would have used that, But its not meant to be pretty its for cleaning!

With the reducer glued and screwed into the end it can be used as a cheap extractor for the 63mm workshop extraction kit

Since doing my wall similar to yours, I reckon it's halved the time it takes me to do things. Just got to deal with all the other "stuff".......

Cheers
