Does anyone have a cheap supplier for commercial workshop insurance? I am with Trade Direct for my public liability insurance which I am happy with so I had a look at their site for premesis insurance too. For cover up to £20,000 they are quoting £341.25 for a years cover. This includes theft, goods and tools in transit, and damage. Do you think this is a good price or could I do better? My equipment value is in the region of £10,000.

Check the policy wording carefully. I have their Professional Indemnity cover and looked to adding Owned Plant cover. Good rates too.

Then I asked about what happens when you make a claim. Market value, I was told.

Right, I said, who sets the market value? Our insurers, they said.

I'm not that stupid.

sounds a lot better than our cover with zurich , which is over a grand for 20k cover at the shop and 4k anywhere.

Andy don't forget the replacement value of your table saw is a **** of a lot more now then it was when you bought yours, around £1600. So I would make sure that you calculated the replacement value of every machine and tool in the shop is correct.

Good luck with your new venture

Cheers

This insurance seemed very good valve, so I asked for more information and got the following response.

Thank you for your enquiry.

I can see that you are a furniture manufacturer but the Aviva premises scheme relates to premises occupied by people in the construction trade as stores or offices and stores, not where any manufacturing takes place. So this scheme will not be able to cater for you.

However we can obtain a quote for your premises/contents/liability if you were able to provide us with the following information:-

Risk address

Construction of the premises

What trade takes place in the premises

Security at the premises

How long have you been at the premises

Sums insured – Buildings (if cover is required) Stock, machinery/plant

Do you required Liability cover, if so what limit of Public Liability is required

What is your annual turnover, clerical and manual wageroll.

Have you had any claims in the last 3 years

I await your advises on this matter.

Regards

I can also confirm Jasons post as this seems to be a reasonable policy as I have PLI and workshop cover with AVIVA for 2Mil and 20K respectively with 4k off site for tools.
It cost me a whopping £600 for the year! It was one of the few companies that would insure me (under a grand) after enquiring through at least 4 brokers and 2 direct insurers.

Cheers,

Neil
