Looking for some reasonably priced floor covering for my workshop. It has a ply on joist floor with celotex insulation. I had been looking at PVC interlocking tiles, but the price for my 5M x 3M workshop is depending on grade from £400 to over £500!!

The workshop wil have various woodworking machines including a TS and benches. Looking for some form of acoustic reduction as the ply floor seems to amplify any noise.

Any suggestions?

I just varnished the plywood with Ronseal Diamond Hard varnish 10 years later it still looks as if I did it yesterday.

My workshop floor is Victorian concrete, laid in gentle waves. I put some sheets of hardboard down 20+ years ago, shiny side up, and it's been ideal. Very cheap too. I have had to renew the gaffer tape along the joins once or twice, but that's all.

My current floor is varnished ply and became very slippy yesterday when I did some routing and the floor became covered in wood chips. So looking for something with anti-slip, some degree of underfoot comfort plus it needs to be in a light grey. Black will be too dark.

In my garage I've used self adhesive vinyl floor tiles from B&Q but they don't provide any acoustic insulation and have been damaged when moving heavy items and they don't resist chemical spills.

Having spent quite a bit of time trawling the internet I think I'm going to have to bite the bullet with the cost of PVC interlocking tiles.

A couple of years ago I had a quote from www.pafsystem.com in Wellingborough, Northants for about 22 m2 of their interlocking "tektiles". These are for workshop or industrial use; they are not the soft cheapos sold by Maplin etc. Unfortunately, I can't find the quote but seem to recall that it was about £200-£250 depending on thickness, colour etc.
They were very helpful and advised me that they often have small quantities left over from a big order and sell these at a discount, so it's worth dropping them an email.

Being tight, though, I put some old carpets down on the concrete floor and they've been fine so far!

Hi Duncan, I've been speaking with PAF and it must have been quite a few years ago that you got a quote as they are now talking about £28 to £30 a sq. metre, plus a £50 pallet delivery charge. The guy did offer me some recycled tiles but they only came in black, they were slightly cheaper at £17 a metre.

Have just received some samples from PAF and Mototile and I'm surprised how hard the plastic is. Not sure whether it would help with noise reduction? But I guess if they were too much softer then it would deform easily.

Waiting for samples from Flexi-Tile who have a slightly softer compound. The guy said it would be ideal for my application and would easily take the weight of my TS and also offer some anti-fatigue when standing for long periods.

The quote was only 2 or 3 years ago but I think it was a "remainders" sale or perhaps recycled as they offered you. Transport didn't come into it as I would have driven over to PAF and collected them.

Looks like you've dug up some good alternatives, though.

Good luck

Hi Rich,,,
Have you tried Soft Floors,,they do interlocking at about £15 /sq; metre,,

Have a look at mats for horse boxes, the Black Mat company are excellent. They come up on eBay. We just sold a good quantity that would have covered your floor for £80 that we had for my daughter in Laws horses. The rubber is usually circa 15mm thick, and the mats are very tough....if a horse cannot destroy it..its indestructible!
