This is seriously worth considering - a flat top with the insert this way up, but a useful stop if reversed. Sorry I can't show it reversed as there's too much clutter there at the moment, but it's 5mm high for a third and 15mm for the other two thirds reversible end to end. When removed it gives access for G cramps the length of the centre of the top.

Yeah I was considering that - seen it on the robos. It is going to get crowded on the top with the tool tray as well :)

You can always have a lip on the sides in your tool well for a lid / extra bench surface ...
and put a cleat for a planing stop on one side of the lid
 
Question is, is this thing going to topple over if I do it solid with no tool well... I need to work out the physics :)

Screw it to the floor or to a sheet of plywood you stand on, then the answer will be a firm no.
